[Engine] 1.6HDi - acceptable play on turbo shaft?

I've read that some play is to be expected due to the bearings running on a film of oil.
Just wondered if anyone has a view on an acceptable amount of play for a turbo shaft?

Check the play on your 2.0 hdi turbo then use that as a comparison.

Hi Cancunia,

I also wondered about the acceptable amount of play for the turbo shaft. Mine (M59 1.6HDi, 2007, 9HXC engine, ~88k miles) has a slight play, ~less than 0.5mm, but I can feel it moving slightly when shaking the shaft. I have not had any problems, so I suppose that is relatively normal.

Thanks for the info. Apart from the strange whining noise which I think is the aux belt & the Antipollution Fault which I think is the MAF (at least according to the OBD code), the engine is running really well so I'll keep the pipe on the end of the turbo for now and refer back to this thread in case of trouble down the line.

You can just feel very slight play just enough to leave enough room for an oil bearing to form.
