DIY timing belt change
#1
I'm going to have a go at this soon but have a couple of questions.

In this video

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0cjDDaAlEKg

He locks the bottom pulley with a drill bit through a flange with several oval holes in it and one round one, (its the flange behind the aux belt pulley) what exactly does this lock, is the flange keywayed to the crank shaft and is the bottom timing sprocket keywayed as well or are they all free to move independently once the bottom pulley bolt is removed? In a different video I watched he jammed a screwdriver between the ring gear and bell housing, that seemed quite secure.

Secondly I don't possess an air ratchet so whats the best way of loosening the bottom pulley bolt, I was thinking a ring spanner and lump hammer. Alternatively I do have a Milwaukee impact driver with a socket attachment but I doubt its man enough to undo this bolt, it did undo some glow plugs though.

Just had a read through it and downloaded the PDF, looks quite straight forward.

Does this kit look ok.

Eurocarparts want £90 just for the kit with another £50 for the pump, is the ebay one cheap for a reason?

Easier on the Berlingo as there is a little bit more room between the inner wing and the engine - 206 was a pig for my hands.

Your DayCo kit on ebay is cheaper at Eurocarparts right now with their 35% coupon so the eBay price is Okish. I've used Gates stuff in the past and cheapest I can find that is £45 - seems to good to be true at that price.

I think I had to make a 'frankentool' by cutting down a 16mm socket to make a shallow one that I could get onto the engine mounting bolts - your tool kit may be better than mine though.

Also bought a set of locking pins - you can use drill bits though (I did on the 206)

Can someone confirm the correct belt out of these two.

https://www.eurocarparts.com/ecp/c/Citro...666&000332

https://www.eurocarparts.com/ecp/c/Citro...2fb&000332

I think its the second one, the vehicle is a 59 (2009) 1.6HDI 16V 75bhp. The engine code is 9HT on the log book which seems to match up to the DV6BUTED4 code on europarts.

Am I correct?

Just had a look at doing this today, don't think I'll bother, took the wheel and wing cover off, looks far too tight and complicated to work and the possibility of something going wrong is enormous. Would much rather relax in the garden and give £300-400 to someone else to have the mither with that one.

Good decision, too easy to mess it up if you are not used to doing this type of job !

Its not that I can't do it, more like I can't be bothered nowadays. In the past I've rebuild and replaced engines and gearboxes etc. One was a Sierra 2.9 4x4 V6 that I rebuilt but I reckon that was more simple that doing a cam belt on the Berlingo.

I gave up as soon as I realised you really can't undo the bottom pulley bolt without an air gun. The only thing I had that fitted was a wheel brace, tried it on, gave it a smack with a hammer and it didn't budge. Now I'm wiser I realised that the engine could turn backwards if I persisted, jumping a tooth or two. I thought it probably wont start again after I've disconnected the diesel lines from the top of the engine and it will end up going rusty sat on axle stands in the back garden for the rest of time.

So I went to the garage 5 minutes away and he is doing it and a service in a weeks time, a much more simple life.

I recently did the same, together with the water pump and main bearing seal. Gave it to a young lad (mid twenties) who had just brought a going concern. He served his apprenticeship with a Citroen main dealer, so felt in good hands. Very reasonable price too.
