Is there any obvious way to check which 1.6 engine I have. Obviously I could take the rocket cover off but both look identical to me.
In the past it was pretty clear as they were twin cams with a big flat head but nowadays some16V engines are run off a single cam.

The VIN should tell you what engine you have, catcar.info with the VIN should also be helpful. Putting the reg into some spares sites like ECP or GSF may help.

Look at the engine. 16v should have clip on plastic cover over the top of engine. Newer 2012ish onwards 8v engine generally does not have a cover. Mine does not anyway & other posters have also mentioned lack of cover.
The 2 engines look noticably different viewed from the open bonnet so if you can post a picture of yours you should get a definitive answer.

Basically the 16 valve DV6's have an acoustic cover on the top of them with "HDi 16" on it in large letters. This could of course have been lost.
The 8v DV6 normally just has a sort of felt cover (if anything at all). There is also a 6in square plastic inlet chamber with a sort of waffle effect on it just above the Turbo. - the 16v DV6's don't have this.
