I'm getting a berli soon,
I do a small number of miles a year, 8k
We're hoping to drive to Italy next year, Rome,Venice and the lakes,
We do like weekends away in the uk, so will build a camper conversion
I have an Audi A6 with the impressive 1.9 pdi engine..
SO..
With over all costs
VED , MPH...
Could I get the 1.6 petrol ...
My BIL has a 1.6 petrol focus..and it pretty nippy
Or should I go for a 1.9 d plodder..
I foresee us keeping the berli for a while, possibly getting rid of the Audi ...

Why not a 2.0HDi, lower tax, better MPG, more power? Also, you can add a cruise control & trip computer at low cost.

True..
but tbh..
Without knowing if it's had turbo failure,
I may spend much more in the long run..?
I've been told ,
if an engine has done one turbo..
it's probable they will destroy more..
A friend had the same engine in a focus it all went wrong at great cost..

As long as 1.6hdi's are looked after and serviced correctly with the right oil they are fine.

But imho..
it's a gamble when buying..
It could have had many turbos

The 1.6 hdi is the pick of the diesels for fuel consumption and VED but its not what I would call a nice engine, it does the job very well but its a clattery agricultural sounding lump, the 2.0 hdi is a nicer sounding engine.
If you don't do a lot of miles and you can put up with the extra VED costs go for the 1.6 petrol, no turbo or owt to worry about.... if we're honest and the running costs were the same as diesels we would all prefer petrol versions.
