Like you say, maybe useful for some. I saw this on another website earlier in the week, many posts were understandably cynical about Halfords' motives for doing this but overall the comments were positive. There are a lot of plusses to getting your car checked for free, the only downsides are the time you take out doing it & the small possibility of getting an unwarranted 'dangerous' test result. If your car fails at Halfords' MOT, you may need a large pinch if salt to judge if it's worth taking somewhere else, AFAIK there's no obligation to get it fixed there.

Pardon my paranoia, but I wondered if anyone took the free MOT offer and got a 'Dangerous' fail? I got a voucher last week and have my MOT booked for the 31st, but the nearest test centre is about 25 miles away. I've had a look through the things that can be classed as dangerous and am pretty sure I'm ok. The only thing I can see on the car that's slightly worrying is the brake discs are worn, but they're not broken or loose.

No

Lets just say they were over the moon with the last mot revamp.

Hard to beat my local garage who are always helpful.
It's just that I have a free (well it cost 50p) voucher from Halfords, but have seen a few stories on review web sites claiming that faults have been created. I can't find anything to suggest that the local branches have done anything dodgy and guess the examples are a tiny minority, but all the same it would be good to get a feel for things.
