[Engine] Frustrating overheating issue.

HI can anybody help, have an over heating problem thats frustrating me. Flushed system, no change. Replaced damaged rad, thermostat, (it had been removed), some one posted on here that it needs 2 stage thermostat (to close off bypass port in head) when it opens is that correct? If so have fitted wrong one supplied by local car spares shop. Replaced water pump (as was doing timing belt kit anyway), am now going to reverse flush cooling system from top hose with thermostat out till system runs clean. Will then refit everything with 2 stage thermostat (if required) Any further suggestions welcome. Hoping this will solve the problem? Also 2 stage rad fan inoperative. Have had it running on both speeds by manually operating relays then accidently shorted one out on engine and now niether will work. Fan still runs if I give it feed from battery. Also have voltage at relays when fan is unplugged which disappers when you plug fan in???? HELP!!!

Omg you and me both!
My 1.4 petrol has been doing the same after having to replace the radiatior, so I have had to flush the cooling system and heater matrix,then bleed the air locks out. My car seemed like it was drinking the water and I was having to top it up daily until the air locks were removed.
I hope this helps, let me know how you progress.

There should be a small bore relief pipe from the engine thermostat cover which if blocked will give indications of a blown c/head gasket and overheating. As I don't have access to a 1.4 engine I cant really be sure where the pipe will come from , only that it will go the header tank.
As for your fans not working there are at least two fuses which feeds the fan motors. both in the engine bay fuse box, are they OK ?

On an 1.4i, you'll need to jack up the the corner of that car to get all the air out of the head. (The water passages in the engine are slightly higher than the position of the thermostat housing and the bleed screw. )

@Broodfather; I've never seen a pipe going from the thermostat housing to the tank on an 1.4i.
(Unless the M59 is vastly different from the M49, the expansion tank is part of the radiator assembly itself.)
