Vacuum oil change & magnetic sump plug

For my next service, I'm thinking of getting the oil sucked out via the Dip stick rather than the traditional method of the sump plug.

The traditional draining of oil from the sump plug still leaves almost half a pint of old oil in there so the suction method must be certainly better ? or would many here disagree with that assumption ?

I'm also thinking of getting the mechanic to fit a magnetic sump plug to collect any metal debris, and changing that every 3 or 4 services , worthwhile ?

I simply drilled a hole in the original oil screw and glued in a magnet with epoxy.

Does the magnet collect much ?

I have used a Pela suction pump for years, and would never give a single thought to grubbing underneath and undoing a sump plug.

Park up after a drive and use the Pela immediately. It takes hot oil. Change the filter at the same time. Ignore the doom mongers - You won't get any problems.

And don't bother with fitting an internal sump magnet - just put one on the outside of the sump. It'll do the same job, which is to capture any fine swarf - not that there is much in modern engines.

I agree.I have a large speaker magnet stuck to my sump.

So a fairly strong magnet then ,,, maybe i'm overthinking but say hypothetically if the magnet came off, you might be left with a lot of swarf floating around.

I'd be very surprised if it ever came off - but if it bothers you, then superglue it on.

Modern engines, coupled with modern oils, produce very little harmful metal particles.

If you put a magnet on the outside, how do you clean the swarf off without removing the sump?

There will be  very little swarf but what there is you can move it to the drain plug hole by dragging it  with the outside magnet to the drain plug hole. Use another slim magnet to pull it out.
