First check would be the auxiliary belt, make sure it's in good condition.

Get your head under the bonnet and get someone to rev the engine so you can maybe narrow down where the noise is coming from.

I had a split in the boost pipe on my Audi ..

it sounded like the window was slightly open..

The power was just not there..!

The sound is VW owners sucking in their breath at seeing a 1.6TD that isn't such a flagrant breach of emissions codes as their own...

I'd go for the pulleys on the Aux belt - if you unhook the belt and start her up without it fitted you can test them.

Mine does a similar thing, I've assumed it's the aux belt. Unfortunately I couldn't start the engine to check it when I had the belt off due to the radiator being out & having no fresh coolant at the time.
I did turn the various pulleys by hand and check for play but all seemed fine.
If the weather is nice as forecast, I'll take a look at getting the belt off later in the week.

I posted here before, I had a squeal, that I thought was an aux belt or time belt, ended up being a blocked cat convertor, exhaust blowing out the joint made the sound

Cheers for help, today i removed the belt and started and it didn't make the noise so its  definitely drive belt related. Spun up the tensioner and idlers but all seemed ok. Fitted new belt and its a bit quieter. I was wondering if it could be the Alternator clutch pulley ? anyone changed theres?
