[Engine] Ticking /Chuffing from Top of Engine 1.6 HDI
#1
Hi all,

Opinions on below please?

Ticking  / Chuffing noise from the top of the engine. Increases / decreases with revs, appears to be from top right when I remove the plastic cover - Doesn't APPEAR to be the injectors although they were loose and I've tightened them. Noise appears to be further back on top.

Cant really tell mate - if its not coming from the injectors i wouldn't worry too much.

It sounds very much like blow by past the injector to me.

I agree, but it doesn't see to be around there - I think I'll leave it on the drive until Monday and get the local guys to have a look at it - thanks

You should be able to see if you look closely at the base of the injectors, use a torch and get your head in there, if you can't see it maybe you can feel it.

We quite often get the egr valves blowing, usually because they are loose.
Not difficult to tighten up on the Berlingo, just requires removing the air box.
A good way to check the injectors is to get a piece of tube & hold it next to your ear.
Then just hover it around the engine next to,the noise, it works like a stethoscope & makes it very easy to pinpoint the source of the noise or blow.

Well there you go all possibility covered, check the EGR valve isn't loose....

Hope you're lucky and it is loose, as that's easier to fix than an injector.

I guess a loose EGR valve will also cause a smell of exhaust gas from that area as well?

The EGR sits right under the airbox and if the airbox works loose it will rub on top of the EGR sometimes causing damage. As Lighty says, it's easy enough to check, the EGR is held on by 2 8mm head bolts.

Quick update on this - I've taken this to a Garage who have advised that the 3 of the injectors are leaking, with carbon deposits and oil on the top of the engine underneath the cover.
Because I've only had the car for just over a month, and because it appears this fault existed at the time of purchase I'm going to contact the original company that sold the vehicle and invoke the Consumer Rights Act to get it repaired free of charge.

By the way, thanks to all for the advice - It really has been appreciated

Roy
