Cannot remember exactly as too long back now but I don't think you need to.

There is a good description in Haynes - manual free to download off this site.

Supurb..thanx for the tip , Smile

I've downloaded the manual,

And it looks like removing the rear engine mount is the way forward, Confused

I presume this allows the engine to move forward slightly , to enable the gearbox to clear the subframe

I know the clutch change in the video below is on a Renault Clio but maybe you could use the same principal.

If you drop the gearbox right down it's always hard work getting it back into the gap.

thats an interesting idea,
but the gearbox does not have enough clearance past the subframe,

I like the idea of super glue on the friction plate .. Cool

Well I had to lower the subframe by 2inches to get the box past.. Huh
probably because the OS. drive shaft would not come out easily Angry

Was the intermediate bearing of the O/S driveshaft seized into the housing?

Maybe..
tbh it's the 1st fwd I've done,  Confused
and I struggled to understand the OS driveshaft intermediate bearing housing... Huh

Now the box is out of the engine bay,
I will investigate the intermediate bearing housing..
Thanks for you input..

For the intermediate bearing, there are two "hockey sticks" which retain the bearing in the housing bolted to the back of the block. You need to undo the 11mm nuts, swing the heads of the hockey sticks out of the way and the bearing (and driveshaft) can be freed from the housing.
