Wipers very slow
#1
Hi, my wipers are quite slow, even on full speed. is this normal for a 2001 berlingo?

ive seen the post about speed sensitive wipers, but not sure if any sarcasm is involved? Confused

are the linkages prone to seizing? are the motors prone to seizing/slowing down?

seems too slow to have been like this from new.

thanks.

im going to strip linkages down at the weekend and grease all connections to see if it helps.

may need to replace or upgrade motor if not.

I've a 2001 berlingo but the wiper speeds are OK , yours has maybe had a harder life than mine regarding rainy weather
There is not much you can do to the linkages except spray with wd40 stuff. It could be the motor on its last legs ( 18/19 years old ?) a scrappy would be a cheap replacement if needed , that's where I got some linkages after they came apart at the joints
the wiper spindles on mine were tight in their housing so maybe worth checking on yours

Hi,
It's often the spindles that the wiper arms fix to that are corroded in the sleeves.

If you can get to the crank part of the rack that connects to the motor take that off from the motor and move the rack by hand, if it's stiff it will probably be the spindles.

The spindles come out of the sleeves, there's normally a cir- clip holding them, clean the spindles and the sleeves and lubricate with silicone grease, you can also add a dab of grease to the balls & sockets on the linkage.

If the rack is nice and free with no stiffness maybe the motor is starting to seize, maybe a worn out bearing or bush.

linkages not too bad, but were significantly improved with WD40, so ive oiled my balls and greased the shafts. only took about 40 mins.

refitted to van but still a bit slow. seem better with higher engine revs. alternator is ok. im thinking motor wiring, earth in particular could be poor connection.

next stop is to check multiplug for corrosion etc.

at least ive eliminated linkages as the fault

I would say the motor seen it many times.

ive fixed it. took the motor off and removed clip on plastic cover. inside there is a brass contact that earths out on body of motor. like a prong that sticks up in a watch battery type affair.
there was a black build up on the brass contact and body (poor earthing) so cleaned it off and wipers now at full speed.
if fault returns i will put additional earth wire from pin 1 of the multiplug directly onto the alloy body of the motor as this contact inside seems a bit of a poor idea.
