yes priming the bulb worked fine on mine when i did the fuel filter, because you are flushing air from the low pressure side, but air on the high pressure side creates a chicken-and-egg situation,where the injectors wont fire because there is no rail pressure, so the pressure reg/suction valve wont kick in because there air in the pipes

Do the diagnostics / Torque show any rail pressure when turning the engine?
Random thoughts...
If you can't tow it to start, priming via the return sounds like a good idea , or maybe the bulb while turning the engine. Can you rig a gravity feed to the input side of the filter? Is there a lift pump on the Mini engine?

The weather here is pretty miserable today too, so thought that I'd have a quick read around. The last 3 or 4 posts in this thread may be of interest:

Success!!

After a lot of head scratching and inspired by Geoff's post here  went looking through the BMW software improving my German as I went thinking that this had to be immobiliser rather than fuel problem.

Turns out that the ECU and Immobiliser were out of sync and throwing a '4A63 Manipulaion Error' - so we can crank the engine but the fuel solenoid is deactivated = no fuel to injectors. Solution found on a generic BMW forum (in Polish) that involved a few mouse clicks and she started on the first press of the button (no key - apparently that is 'progress'?). Strong possibility that the error was generated by running down the battery too much whilst cranking.

Took the car out on a run, got it really warmed up and it is 100% fine - goes like it should. Still got to drop sump again and get a new strainer in there/change the oil that has done a hundred miles or so - considering that a 'flush' really.

So summary: 1.6 HDi 110 HP with DPF/EGR. Fitted with injectors from a 90HP model. According to Steve from HDi Tuning this runs a very sooty engine (confirmed!) and gave us a bad judder.
Turbo on it's last legs having had a new vane 'cassette' fitted around 6,000 miles ago but the back end had sooted up. New turbo fitted eased problem but still judder.
At this point discovered wrong injectors so replaced with set from scrappy. No different. However one of that set was incorrect part number.
Next day refused to start (wrong assumption) airlock in diesel system
New set of correct recon injectors from PF Jones fitted, still no start, found to be an immobiliser error.
Error corrected - all good.

Moral: check the injector numbers first when you get a car in - there's several different Bosch ones for the different flavour of this engine and they do not mix

The electronic wizardry ( that doesn't work in most cases) ticks the boxes they have to tick, who makes the boxes that have to be ticked is undefined.

Yes it's all Bollocks.....

People pay £20 road tax based on vehicle emissions but drive 30K per year....the man with the 2.0 petrol who does 2k per year pays £200 +.... question the sense !

Tax should be on the fuel not the vehicle, an argument that has been ignored for years !
