MOT & Emissions Limits
#1
Just had my MoT & passed without issue, so am not complaining.
When I got the car in August there was a problem with the MAF so I was curious about emissions & checked the results. I noticed that the emissions limit they used when testing my car was wrong so thought this might be of interest to anyone with an older car failing their emissions test.

The new emissions limits are stated here, and in several other places:

https://www.gov.uk/government/publicatio...r-vehicles

My 2008 1.6HDi passed easily with a reading of 0.58 but the 1.5 test limit applied by the garage was wrong, it should have been 3.0
1.5 is correct for cars first used after 01 July 2008 with no 'Plate' value (see above link), but my car was first used in April 2008 so the limit should have been 3.0

Does your car have a plate with a value on, if yes where is it?

There's a plate on mine similar to the examples in the link above, but there's no value stamped on it. This was noted on the emissions test sheet.
The plate on mine is on the driver's side wing, where the wing meets the bulkhead, just under where the VIN is stamped into the wing.

Can't say I've noticed that plate on mine, I'll take a look tomorrow to see if it's there and if it has a value on it.  Wink

I did hear that the plates were being "Lost" on some vehicles so they would be tested on the default limit and not on the lower plate value!

Yeah, there's no rule that says there has to be a plate so far as I can tell.

Found the plate on mine, it's on the drivers side strut top housing, the value on it is 1.80.

Ah, that's the one I painted over! There was a bit of rust on the top of the turret so I painted it with silver rust treatment paint and half covered that sticker. I'll see if I can get the paint off with petrol or thinners. I thought it was a part number so didn't pay it any attention.
Interesting, and good news, that the emissions test value they used is actually lower.

I cleaned the paint off the sticker on my car and have the same as JJ9's. Smile
I did some reading around this morning & it seems there are some issues with smoke testing machines not accepting higher than default values.
If you have a 1.6 registered after 01 July 2008, or as in my case registered in April 2008 you may get some problems if your car it close to the 1.8 limit.
Here's a 2009 Berlingo issue:
https://mattersoftesting.blog.gov.uk/mot...ment-31445
And the response from another tester
https://mattersoftesting.blog.gov.uk/mot...ment-31481

Seems that the DVLA are making regular tweaks to the testing manual, it's no longer certain that the MIL is a failure:
https://mattersoftesting.blog.gov.uk/mot...ment-31376

Here's the relevant section of the manual, I don't recall seeing this when I checked a few weeks ago.
https://www.mot-testing.service.gov.uk/d...ection_8.2
Near to the end of section 8.2:
"You need to inspect MIL fitted to diesel vehicles with 4 or more wheels and first used on or after 1 July 2008."

Anyone know what the significance of 01 July 2008 is?
