2.0 Hdi starting (another one)
#11
The 2.0hdi does not use the glow plugs for starting but more to do with emissions and cold running.

The starter will sound fine but can be well down on rpm = pump pressure down, add into the mix some wear in the injectors and pump.

Good call, hadn't tried that.

Doh, Forgot the basics.  Too focussed on the sensor thing.

Good call on the connections.  Connected  a jump lead between the cylinder head and battery negative, starter turned over much faster and engine cold started.  Basics.  Earth strap connection cleaned, success.  Might even treat it to a new 1.8 Kw starter as well.  Faith restored in car, my old 1.9d started under 6 inches  of snow, hopefully this one will now do the same.

My 2.0 had trouble starting as soon as the weather got cold a few weeks after I bought it. August no problem, October big problem. Being thrifty & old school, I bought some new brushes for the Bosch starter, gave it clean and put it back together. Never had another problem. I also bought another starter on ebay that was never used by me as the Bosch was fine for a couple of years, then the 2.0 was sold.
There are a few posts on here about buying high power starters, they were designed for low temperature climates and apparently work really well in the UK.

the heavy duty starter...best thing i ever fitted,my 2.0 desire was always a bit of a slow starter but always started.fitted the heavy duty starter and instant starting all the time dosnt matter how cold it gets. they are quite a bit bigger with a different number of teeth. got to be the way to go.

Just from my own experience, and based on excellent advice received on this forum. Checklist

ECU requires the engine to be turning @ 200 rpm+ on starter motor and 200 Bar in fuel rail before the injectors will fire so even an engine which seems to be turning over well will not fire unless these criteria are met, equally, easy start will be of little help. The flatter the battery gets, the less chance. Previous owner had had the crankshaft sensor changed so, obviously low crankspeed suspected by garage.

So, in my case, engine cranked over for a while at +6 degrees and then started/ran fine, below that not a peep, even with 2 batteries in parallel. Oil viscosity below 6 degrees probably slowed the motor just enough. Once warmed, engine started OK all day although turned over for longer than I would have expected. Either slow starter and/or poor fuel supply.

Starter, power loss or worn.

Step 1. Battery condition and rating. Biggest and best that will fit.
Step 2. Check resistance between engine block and battery -ve. If high, clean contacts on earth strap. (short cut test is to connect jump lead between block and earth and see if starting improves).
Step 3. Isolate battery. Disconnect , clean and reconnect starter feed connection at solenoid. Test starting.

Mine was working well at this point but I went one step further and changed the starter motor.

Step 4. New starter motor, the original one may be tired (Note, changing the motor automatically satisfies Step 3 connector cleaning). Little price difference so, I went for the 1.8 Kw motor for additional power but do note that this draws 150 A as opposed to the original 116 A. Check your starter cable.

Fuel.

Not sure if it made much difference but, noted a lot of air in the fuel after filter. As the Siemens pump is suction only, pretty clear that there was an air leak there. Tried changing the filter and the new seal supplied with it. No change, new filter housing bought, no air in fuel.

Now starts like a good'un.
Hope that this helps somebody.
