Hello everyone, I have recently joined the forum due to my purchase of a neglected Berlingo 1.9d, it has a number of faults that I am sorting out before putting it on the road. One problem I have is the old oil in the water issue, my investigations have led me to the oil cooler, and I am hoping that this is the problem on my car. This however has got me thinking about the description "oil cooler" which would to my mind be a radiator type component, I think that what we have on the engine is more like an oil heater, or possibly an oil temperature regulator, and designed to get the oil quickly up to temperature for emissions and fuel economy. Your thoughts please.

it's an oil cooler. The engine coolant takes longer to come up to temperature than the oil does. Although heat from the oil probably aids in bringing the coolant up to temperature more quickly which would in turn warm the engine and make it more efficient.
Bear in mind these engines are designed to be used everywhere from the edge of the arctic circle to the deserts of North Africa. Chances are the oil cooler is more important in the latter.

The reason that I have brought this point up is that in my experience, the oil can take much longer to get up to operating temperature, and it gets hotter than the coolant. The difference between the operating temperature of the oil and coolant is not that great, this means that the water will not sink that much heat out of the oil.

Have you not brought this point up because you want to know if you can remove the oil cooler as you think it's leaking oil into the coolant

So have you fitted it?
Interested to know if your oil in the water was coming from the "Device"

I've not fitted it yet, and off in our motorhome now for the New Year, I will report when I've fitted it and cleaned the oil out of the coolant. I only gave £180 for the car (2004 Desire) so not that bothered if it's the head gasket/cylinder head gone.

The coolers are normally quite reliable but you never know.
Enjoy your New Year's trip.
