[Filters & Oil] Another 1.6HDi Oil thread! Pre DPF *w30 or *w40

Just wondering what the views are on *w30 vs *w40 C2/C3 oils for older / higher mileage pre DPF 1.6HDi engines?

I have Gulf 0w30 in my engine at the moment. It's now done 135k miles and I'm wondering if a *w40 oil might be better? The C2 rating is for primarily for DPF engines so I'm thinking that C3 might also be ok.
From what I've read elsewhere, 1.6 Mini engines are ok to run on *w40 oil, not sure about Fords.

Thoughts, opinions but please no flames.

Not sure what year 1.6 you have. I'd look up the PSA oil spec for that motor and then see which oils conform.

The main issue for oil in engines with a DPF is that it needs to be a low ash oil.

Running w40 oil won't matter so long as it's low ash.

Mine is 2008 16v, the Citroen recommendation is 0W30 or 5W30 C2, with PSA B 71 2290 approval. I'm just wondering if a slightly heaver oil might be better for high mileage motors.

I run 5w30 C2/C3 in both the Pug, Mini & the 'Lingo - Mini & Pug have DPF, Lingo does not but I just use the same oil/filters in the lot as I am a simple soul. All have between 125,000 and 152,000 miles on them.

From the Mini handbook (p104) - bit in italics is mine:

MINI Longlife-04   ([BMW Longlife-04 (BMW LL-04)Special BMW approval for fully synthetic long-life oil. Viscosities are
                                      SAE 0W-30, 0W-40, 5W-30 and 5W-40. Usually required for BMWs equipped with a 
                                      diesel particulate filter (DPF). 
                                     Can also be used where a BMW Longlife-98 or BMW Longlife-01 oil is recommended.)
Alternatively:
Mini Longlife-01 (Seems to be a 5W40 to ACEA A3/A4 see below)
ACEA A3/B4       (I think this one is just plain wrong and it should be C2/C3 to go with the DPF)

In the bad old days a thicker oil for older motors used to be the recommended norm (got a gallon of 20W50 here for the Moggie!) but I'm not so sure it makes a difference on more modern (better engineered) engines.? I guess it's a debate that could go round in circles all day. My own feeling is that in the colder weather I'd stick with 5W30 - maybe go to 5W40 if I lived in the South of France in August.

p.s. nobody told me that when you dropped the strainer there was about 100ml of oil up there that would easily fill your ear :-)

5W-40 is fine, been using it in our two 1.6 hdi's for years with no problems.
We use the ECP stuff, keep and eye out and get it when it's buy one get one free.

You don't need expensive oil if like most on the forum members you prefer to change your oil at half the recommended 12K interval.

You don't need low ash stuff if you haven't got a DPF, to be honest I doubt in reality the low ash oil would make a jot of a difference anyway.
If I had a DPF I would be more concerned about the fuel I was using containing an average of 5% of bio diesel.    


Oh, almost forgot, oil that has PSA approval is no better than oil that doesn't have the approval but is equal to the spec, it's just the oil manufacturer decided not to pay PSA the money to grant them the approval

they can clog up pretty quickly if you don't use saps oil, but you're right if there's no dpf you don't need it.

And if an oil has the BMW or Ford approval but not the PSA approval it'll be fine, it's the same engine.

The only thing i would add a mate of mine used non low saps 5w40 in his 1.6hdi picasso with a dpf for over 100k and never had any issues with the dpf. The only thing to add was he was doing 75% motorway miles at 60 mph so that may have kept it clear? Or was he just lucky?

Mine has used about 0.3L of oil in 3-4k miles, mostly motorway. From what I've read, it's not excessive for a 135k engine but others have reported zero usage so I was wondering if heavier oil might help the engine. Cost wise it's not a big issue when spread over the 6k miles I'm planning to do between changes.

If your car does not have a DPF it will be the exact same spec engine as what my car has, I have the hand book here that came with the car and the oil specified is either 10w-40 or 5w-40, there is no mention at all of 0w-30.

5w-30 is mentioned but that is under the heading "Energy Saving Oil" then there's a list of engines it should not be used in.

The later 1.6 hdi's may have had 5w-30 recommended but that doesn't mean it's any better, in fact it could be worse for the engine when you consider that manufactures are specifying thinner oils to achieve fuel efficiency figures.

Personally I wouldn't use 0w-30 in the engine or any engine with a fair few miles under its belt, in my opinion it's too thin.




And regarding the use of PSA approved oils....

Note the wording on the page just below the tables . . . "Or any oil of equivalent quality"
