another axle question!?
#1
im about to order a new axle from IMaxles gents.
my 06 1.9d is a 600kg model so i should buy the 600 axle, right?
if i purchase the 800 axle, the only difference is the beefier torsion bars, right?
will an 800 fit my van and also im guessing if i fit this will the rear end be a bit stiffer? (im not carrying weight in the rear)

I would say you are correct with everything you've stated replace like for like.

I think there was a thread on here a while back where someone had fitted an 800kg axle in place of a 600kg one and the ride was very rigid.

rigid is good, id like to drop the rear 40mm, IMaxles lower for free.
i cant find any info on wether or not there is a difference in rear shocks between the 600 and 800. im inclined to think they are the same?
while changing the axle i may aswell fit new shocks too

I think the shockers are the same.

According to the parts catalogue Earlier M59's with 1000kg suspension have different dampers, later ones have only one part number for all.

I would test drive an 800kg one empty first, you may find the back end bounces up and down like a pea on a drum without any weight on it.

Handling will be better with an 800kg setup due to stiffer rear setup, ride may be compromised by a stiffer setup... but I would expect dampers to be switched for optimum handling also, 405 mi16 fit as the axle is identical if I remember right

I think there is a risk if it's too stiff it'll skit about on bumps, so it has a negative effect on road holding. It would reduce body roll, but that's a different issue to road holding.

if your buying a new axle and not a recon from them then they only do 800 kg ones (according to them) i fitted one to my 600 van in september.Brakes are all the same only difference on a 800 van is torsion bar and front springs .monroe only list shocks for van with no mention of weight load.It drives like new now although i did change the rear mounting bushes and fitted monroe gas shocks.

From experience uprating the bars on a mk2 improved everything, reduced body roll, increased grip, less tendency for uncontrolled oversteer if setup correctly, and better turn in... all of which contribute to handling and road holding

I will add you can adjust the handling characteristics of the van by adjusting the rear height of the van by 4-5mm at a time, basically the higher you adjust the rear of the van the more weight will transfer under breaking, it’s all about finding the sweet spot where the weight transfers to the front contact patch just enough so it turns in nicely but not so much that it try’s to pirouette every time you brake into a corner

I got my V6 van bang on after several weeks of fine tuning with an updated anti roll bar and also 800kg torsion bars, this made the van out manoeuvre lots of vehicles that definitely didn’t expect me driving round them on bends Smile
