Hello folks,
New to the forum having just sold my mx5 to get a Berlingo 2.0 HDi which I intend on travelling Europe in. I've only owned it a few days and despite it being relatively beaten up I'm already falling for the old girl.
There are a couple of issues I want to sort before starting work on the camper conversion, the biggest of them being the central locking.
Symptoms are as follows:
1.Driver and passenger front doors only open by putting the key in the door.
2.Unlocking either door in this way DOESN'T open the rest of the doors at the same time.
3.The rear sliding doors only unlock from the inside of the car using the individual locking switches.
4.The rear sliding doors DO lock using the remote central locking buttons.
5.None of the doors unlock using the RCL but the indicators do flash.
I've done a BSI reset to no avail, any further ideas appreciated before I pull the BSI out and look at that, my knowledge of how it works is relatively limited and I feel I'm likely to break something.
Cheers!

Welcome to the forum. The symptoms you describe look identical to those I experienced with my 2005 2.0 HDi Multispace. The doors would lock but not unlock, even though the lights flashed. In my case the problem was a poor connection in the BSI requiring it to be removed and very slight corrosion removed.
The BSI consists of 2 boards. One is the brains and is fixed for your car. The other is a series of servos (relays) which amplify the signals from the first board. The central locking servos are on the second board. This board can be replaced with another, from a scrapper for example.
The 2 boards are connected by 2 multipin connection blocks. The connections are a tight push fit but are not soldered. Any moisture that gets in the BSI, through a windscreen leak usually, tends to cause mild corrosion on these pins and, as the central locking servos (relays) carry a relatively high current, the circuit becomes high resistance and effectively open circuit.
In my case I had to remove the BSI from the vehicle, open the case and separate the 2 boards. I used a school wooden ruler to GENTLY prise them apart. I cleaned off the little corrosion present with a dry stiff toothbrush then reassembled using an electical switch lubricant (like Servisol). That was 5 years ago and it still works fine. Mine incidentally is also a converted camper (we call it the cramper).
This thread outlines the process

Good luck. Let us know how you get on. Removing the BSI is a bit fiddly as access is not good but all the plugs etc are unique so it's hard to get reassembly wrong. Be careful rejoining the 2 boards.
Mike

Thank you Mike, I had read your thread, it was actually what led me to this forum after googling my issue!
I'm a little nervy about faffing with the BSI but I will follow your guidance and give it a go, I also noticed today that the stereo turns the volume to 0 on it's own, perhaps an extension of the same problem?
Today was exciting as I ordered my camper box, (a R.E.D Campers Trekka) 4 hour drive to collect on Saturday.
Cheers.

If you suspect the bsi could be at fault there are companies out there that can test and repair it for you.
Are we there yet?????

Believe me, the hardest bit is getting the BSI out of the car. Taking the case off is, from memory, quite easy, and separating the 2 boards is easy but needs care not to rush it. I would not be surprised if you find imperfect connection between the boards. Dont forget to use Servisol, or something similar. (available from CPC in Preston) It makes for good contact and stops the corrosion returning. But it's not like WD40 so don't splash it around.
My cramper is a custom made job from now defunct Lifestyle Developments, with raising roof, beds and toilet too. Quite a squash but great when you get used to it. Good luck with yours. The Berlingo is a great vehicle.

Didn't realise you we're just up the road Mike!
R.E.D are doing my conversion, not as extensive as yours but will be a great starting point.
I'm travelling back from Blackpool to Manchester tonight so i'm not risking removing the BSI just yet, will do it tomorrow when I won't have to rush it.
Do I need any specific tools for removal?
Cheers

I am in Ainsworth, so not far from you.
You don't need any special tools, just a torch to see how the plugs are removed.
Good luck

Also, I've just ordered a used BSI unit so I can swap over the top board.
