I have fancied a Berlingo/partner for a while as I spend quite a bit of time in Spain and they are everywhere. Anyway having used a transit for a few months for house move/renovation it was time to get rid and find replacement which has come in the form of a 1999 Partner van with 1.9 diesel. I paid very little for it and it only has 59k miles but no service history. I will run it around for a while but wonder if it is worth large scale investment. I feel i ought to do timing belt but foresee other things might start cropping up. We will see.

Hello and welcome.
Not much goes wrong with the 1.9D so I wouldn't worry on that score.
You are more likely to meet expenditure on consumable such as exhuast, discs and pads.
Do you undertake your own maintenance ? most all things Berlingo are very diy friendly, also a Haynes manual is available for free downlod on this site so have a search for it.
First thing I'd do would be to get a garage to put it on a ramp and check it over much like with an mot and this will highlight any issues and upcoming expense.
If nothing much crops up I'd get the timing belt AND water pump replaced first and take it from there bit at time or in one big hit if the wallet is friendly.
Have fun.
