You can and yes it will pass the mot, you need to find the horn push wires behind the column and tap into them, the wire numbers and pinouts will be specific to your van and not a set colour at all, so it’s fairly hard to help without some proper wiring diagrams for your van

You won’t need an in-line fuse as ideally you will use an earth and the return from the existing switch assuming it’s currently the switch that’s died, what have you tried to fix it and can you get the horn to work by supplying power or an earth to it currently? If not how do you know an extra switch will fix it?

Hi dumdum
i was hoping to do it the oldfashioned way by going direct to the battery with its own inline fuse and a new horn
mounted in an easier position.

also forgot to mention that i have re earthed the current horn by drilling a new hole and screwing it down and an earth to the steering column, checked fuses and wiring but no joy.

Easiest way is to run new wires from battery and even fit a new horn if access is difficult to old horn ( is it under the bumper ? ). Old school ways are best sometimes

You really don’t need to, use a h7 bulb and some wires to check the circuit at various points along its length, finding the wire at the back of the steering wheel should be easy with a little help from a wiring diagram, tap into that and use the original horn push with a live to the other side of the horn, basically I’d only replace the broken part, be it wiring or whatever

In our previous car I had a Klaxon on a toggle switch and the MOT tester used to test that as well as the one on the steering wheel, really he just likes the noise it made and seeing people jump in the test station. Big Grin
So where does this bit go then ?

Can only speak from my experience with my 04 1.9.  The horn was intermittent / not working for months. Thought that it was either the horn push or the horn which had failed.   I looked into fitting another independent horn and switch but then the trim above the pedals came loose, I refitted it and the horn worked.  Can't say what I disturbed but there must have been a loose connection.  Worth a quick fiddle in that area?

I had this issue and it turned out to be the wires to the brake light switch had rubbed against the brake pedal arm when pushed and worn through. I taped up the wires and routed the wires slightly different and it fine now.
Just an update I didn't think I had got this right when I posted and now my brain has thawed out, the brake light wiring to the switch on the pedal was catching on the steering column when it was turned and this had worn through the wires not the brake pedal arm.
Are we there yet????? Huh
