airbag stolen - is it a thing

we have a B9 on Motability for my dad who is disabled [its a wheelchair adapted berlingo], have had it since 2013 when it was new.

overnight it was broken into, and they removed the airbag [only!], is that a "thing" now, cos its new to me.

they must have tried to go in via the door lock at first, cos thats buggered, then they broke the door window, they have taken the airbag without entering the car as it was still locked when we were alerted to it by a neighbour

even the police thought it was odd, as did motability


it is very odd, its not like these airbags must be rare, pretty sure many cit model of the age must have the same bag in the steering wheel

hugely annoying more than anything, its off to be repaired tomorrow, and its cost me the excess.

I have moved the car into my back yard which is enclosed, seeing as there is no window in it now, where I took the pics

It's more common with expensive cars, as they have much more expensive airbags, but...
Yes it's a thing.
There's a lot of more or less legal cars in Eastern Europe(stolen cars transported and sold there) owned by rarther reckless and incompetent drivers. Airbags never last long. Of course they ask the same goons that supplied the car...
Sometimes even owners of legal cars buy stolen airbags because they're cheaper.

If more countries shared info on stolen cars and put checks in place to stop the rampant bribery...

Wow never seen that before a break in just to seal an airbag, shame that's the society we live in now I suppose.

repairers say that the steering wheel is damaged, airbag missing [obviously!], lock barrel damaged, door handle damaged, small area around door lock deformed.

gonna be a week at least to fix it
