[Transmission] CV Boot Clip
#1
My brakes started to act as if there was a warped or damaged disc, so I took the front wheels off and discovered that the CV boot clip on one side has broken. I can't see any problems with discs or pads but there is a fair amount of grease so am guessing a pad has got some on it. Strange thing is that it's juddering when braking hard rather than just poor performance.

You'll need metal clips to refasten the boot, but I guess you've noticed that, already...
(some types requires special tools to tighten up)

Anyway, the grease in the joint must be considered 'contaminated' so it needs to be replaced with new grease. A messy job, but must be done.

The juddering can be many things, though...
Does your car have ABS?

New clips ordered and should be with me early next week, I'll clean out the grease as suggested. In the mean time, I have a couple of cable ties in place and won't be doing any mileage other than maybe a trip to the shops.

Yes, it has ABS & that's a possible cause. I've also ordered some cheap pads in case the old ones are contaminated. There's no obvious warp or rough spots on either disc but will double check in more detail next week when the parts arrive.

Get a 'dial indicator', like this one;
https://www.ebay.com/itm/Test-Precision-...SwMtJciJ7w
You'll need one with a base of some sort, and magnetic works well.
Fasten it to the brake caliper, and put the point onto the side of the disc, then slowly rotate it and see if there's much deflection.

It is apparently acceptable to secure cv boots with tiewrap clips in fact some after market kits come with those.

I read about cable ties being used and being no issue for MOTs but when I tried them I couldn't get them tight enough for confidence that they'd stay on for any length of time. I've crimped a steel clip on now, I'm still not 100% happy but it's not moved at all so far.

I think the judder on the brakes was caused by a build up of burnt crud on the outer inside rim of the disc. My guess is that was from a small amount grease spinning out of the boot.
