This issue appears to be getting worse and I had a nerve wracking 15 mile journey today in one instance the rev counter dropped to zero even though vehicle was at speed (~40mph) and then recovered. On other occasions no big change in indicated revs.
The ESP lamp went out once but soon returned, it is always out on startup and there are no issues with starting.
I have a 1.6 HDI engine. Any sugestions?

Maybe it was the crankshaft sensor with a bad connection, it needs to be removed to change the belt. Good to know it's fixed all the same.

Did you have any errors on diagnostic ?
Lexia or plain ODB...
I have seen a lot of bad CKP sensors on Renault.
Renault original Clip Diagnostic shows nothing.
Revs goes all over the place. Engine hesitates a lot...
Replace CKP , engine like new... Diagnostic not helping at all....
Best regards,
