Hello! New to Berlingos

Hello, first time on here. I have wanted a Berlingo for years but had to wait until they were old enough for me to buy one! I have just test-driven a 2001 multispace 1.9 that I really would like so have come on here to find out more. I don't mind the sluggishness of the model, I think there's less that can go wrong with them. But the accelerator pedal was really (like, REALLY) heavy- took ages for it to move from standing but fine once it got going. I don't know if that's normal or indicates a problem, hmmm.... I probably shouldn't be asking stuff on the introduction bit, I'd best have a nosey around the site :-)

Welcome along ThoraB, your username caught my eye for some reason. How do you mean with the accelerator pedal, was it responsive as you would expect, or physically hard to depress? If the latter, i can't see it being a sign of something more sinister, but more likely something about the pedal mechanism.

Thanks Andre, really hard to press down it felt like I was going to have to jump on the pedal with both feet! thought it may be really tiring on long journeys. The car looks so well looked after though. I really want it but am trying to be shrewd & sensible... but cant help get a bit giddy at the thought of all those camping trips, gigs etc! :-S

Welcome, I think you have come to the right place for advice, but, also, maybe you should get someone to check out the car with you prior to purchase .

Welcome to the forum.Keep it simple.Check the throttle cable first as it's the most likely culprit.It's very unusual for the pedal pivots to sieze,but there is always the first time!!The quadrant on top of the pump is more likely to weep fuel from it's "O" ring than to sieze.Good luck & keep us posted.

Hi, just reading your thread. I would take somone with you who knows abit about cars, there are three things it could be, a strong spring that as been put on the end of the throttle, A bad throttle cable - cheap to replace, and the worst thing is to check that the lever on the diesel pump is free to move by hand. with it been the early berlingo it sound be the XUD engine which is pretty bullet proof, good luck.:wave:

Thanks everyone, I've been saving up for 3 years so it's a bit scary emptying the ole' piggybank! I've been trying to find a friendly mechanic to come along, not so easy, here's hoping...

I remember the first time I ever drove a Berlingo 1.9D, and the same happened with a Xantia and ZX diesel - the throttle pedals were far harder to press down than any petrol car I'd ever driven before. I find the one in our 2.0HDI Berlingo way heavier than the Focus we also have, and a lot heavier than my Xantia Activa - it could just be this that ThoraB is experiencing.

Hope it turns out to be the car of your dreams, and knock em down in price if pedal is heavy and hard to floor, after you know its not too serious.

Haaha! Female yes but probably old enough to be Andre's cool yet eccentric Aunty! It's up for £1,700, I've got them to £1250 plus my car- which the paint is peeling off, but they want because it's low mileage & automatic. I'd be happy at £1k. I know the cambelt won't have been changed in the last 70,000 miles & I'd bet it's due a major service. so I'm going to chance leaving it for a couple of days if I can stay away... then go in with a mechanically minded friend- if I can flippin' find one! cratch:

Thanks, this could definitely be the case, I have an automatic Micra that is like a toy car to drive- so the contrast will be great. My Dad had a drive too, he felt the same & has driven a lot of different vehicles. It was ok once you'd got it there, I just wondered whether i'd end up cursing it on long journeys. I do reckon i'd get used to it.
