Front Springs
#11
Very tricky job with manual spring compressors, especially Berlingo, as said they have very long springs.
Far better to take you whole assembly to a garage & get them done for a few quid.
Top strut mount & bearings are a must on these , also the antiroll bar links are hard to save , easier to cut off & replace.

Youll need 2 x sets of spring compressors and you can move them down the spring as they compress . The drop links will come out if not too rusty , try a good dose of wd40 for a couple of days before you start , they are cheap but make sure they are quality ones purchased from a good outlet , don't don't don't buy from ebay , the cheap Chinese ones are as good as a chocolate tea pot . Check your shocks whilst they are out and have a good look at the strut bearings , any doubt , replace them . Allow a lot of time [ half day per side ] and youll be ok . It can be awkward removing the top nut so again plenty of lube . Make sure when you refit your drop links smear on some copper ease onto the threads , they'll come out easier next time .

Evening guys,

Well I've got the Springs, mounts, bearings and links. Wasn't kidding about the length of the springs....

I had a good look under the van yesterday. Prior to taking the strut off the Haynes Manual says I need to compress the spring. The location of the break is pretty awkward to get the compressors on safely. The main issue is the the spring compressor threaded bar is hitting the top of the car with the spring hardly even compressed.... So I need to go out and find some spring compressors which work the opposite way (downwards)

I gathered that I'd need to do it in two stages, so thank you for confirming. I've been throwing wd40 over everything the past couple of days. I don't think I will get time until next week to do it, I will let you know how I get on. Gives me time to search for some spring compressors which fit.

What load rating should I be looking at for the spring compressors? do I go by the total weight of the van? (1167kg)?

Thanks again.

You can take the strut off the vehicle as long as you leave the nut on the top of the centre rod to hold the spring in compression then fit the compressors after it is removed from the car. It would be a real pain to do it with the strut still fitted to the car. You reassemble it with the spring fitted before putting the strut back on the car. Have you looked through the forum for previous spring problems there is plenty of advice.
So where does this bit go then ?

Noted, yup, just hace done thank you.

Can anyone shred a bit of light/explain of Spring Compressors load ratings? Would 1200kg be enough?

My hydraulic one is rated at 1 ton and compresses Berlingo springs easily so 1200kg should be enough.
