EGR valve - clean, blank, or replace?

Yes, just cardboard I'm afraid, which I've used occasionally in the past when 'in a spot'. Not ideal I grant you. When I get time I'll lift out the airbox again and see if it has soot on the underside like the original had. 
I don't know enough about the implications of blanking EGR which Graeme's gasket would do (if that's his suggestion) but I've seen this one on eBay. Think I'd slot the bolt-holes to avoid removing the EGR again. https://rover.ebay.com/rover/0/0/0?mpre=...3328610474

Hi - blanking the EGR is an individual's decision based on ethics, urban/rural driving and/or the state of the engine. Certainly on your model it should not throw an EML if you wanted to try it.
Your link looks right enough for the steel gasket - I've never had much joy slotting them to fit though and I've found that sticking them to the EGR with a little bit of gasket sealer or similar helps get them lined up to drop the long bolts back in.

If blanking the EGR increases emissions I won't be doing it - I get enough grief for driving a diesel. When the weather warms up a bit I'll get the bonnet up again. Meanwhile I'll order a gasket. When my Mrs drove the car last week I asked her if she could still smell anything but she has virtually no sense of smell so that didn't help.

It would certainly increase the emission of nitrous oxides. Same with me, I have not blanked mine due to this particular reason.

An EGR will increase the amount of soot /particulate so you're swapping one kind of pollutant for another unless you also have a DPF to catch the soot. An old EGR will probably stick open or closed to some extent too.

EGR valves are sticking plasters to the problem and a cheap way round it for the manufacturers.

Funny now the trucks have gone euro 6 most dont use an EGR, reason - they have had to totally redesigned the engine so the cheapo sticking plaster was not needed.

The manufacturers know they can be unreliable, increase particulars, and increase fuel consumption. They really are the devil.

If mine was playing up i would have no trouble blanking it off, i also have no problems driving a diesel. Remember we were encouraged to buy diesel because they produce lower CO2.

Im a diesel tec so ive been driving a diesel since the 80s - the diesel is a excellent engine the petrol is its poor relative in the truck and van market.

It depends. In my country, professional vehicles have to undergo an inspection every 6 months. It is not profitable to blank the valve.
