sell up or repair ?
#1
Hello,

My 2003 partner has its mot untill jun 2020, it did fail which cost me around 300 to put on the road, exhaust (cat) a few other things.

now i am wanting to stay with a van or berlingo with seats (makeshift van)

but i think that i need a new D/S wheel bearing as there is a very loud humming at 40-50mph its like if you was driving on the white lines on the motorway you hear the difference, i also need ANOTHER windscreen as this one cracked when i was driving from london to cardiff.

i have spent a fair bit on it since i bought it in sep 2018 and have changed it from a builders van to something more pleasent on the inside, carpeted and led lighting inside, changed the steering wheel to a 206 gti, ( i have a post on a before and after)

see my mot adviserys and see what you think and please say what you would do also.

( ooh i dont actually need a van its just handy as im military so when i go on courses its easy to move kit )

You have to ask yourself the question how far do you want to go with a 16 year old van. If you were to do the work yourself I'd say go for it fix it. But if you will be paying someone it would have to be a big no as labour will be extremely expensive.

Windscreen - how much is the excess these days for insurance claim ?

If the above is reasonable then I'd get the vehicle put through the MOT now as the advisory list isn't that bad in some senses and that way you'll at least get another year out of it, scrap afterwards.

I think the bottom line, or the end of the road, is that it won't live forever, therefore don't spend money on it but instead keep it handy and be thankful that you're still on the road and can wait until a good replacement comes along, instead of having to grab whatever you can find now.

It could be that all those advisories are not very far gone, and as V6Boy says, someone with knowledge and experience could put most of them right with little more than a wire brush (wishful thinking!), but your comment about your internal mods makes me think you're like me - not really a mechanic so dependent on paying for one, in which case my first sentence kicks in. Surey your internal mods are fairly easy to swap over? Get a bog standard steering wheel from a junk yard for example, so you can keep the 206 one; as for carpets and lights, most people tend to do a far better job second time around anyway.

But what would be the benefit of putting most of those issue right anyway? if the next MOT had few or none of them, it would indicate that a lot of work has been done and may make the van more attractive for sale on eBay. But how much it might then fetch compared to scrap value, plus the hassle of private sale versus an easy scrapping, is something only you can weigh up. I work long hours, so hassle-free scrapping has a big advantage in saving time for me, but if I had lots of free time, fixing this baby is one way it could be put to profitable use.

there are pros and cons

i would sell it private as the misses works round the corner and i could use her car if it ever sold, but also alot of the stuff isnt that expensive, anti roll bars etc, but sadly ive just moved to west london where before i had a driveway and garage now its on street parking, where all my contacts are back in cardiff who did me alot of the mechanical favours.  but i do think the garage that i got it last mot'd seem to be very rigid as where ever it was done previous probably didnt look at it too much, as it had one advisory then 6000k later i had my mot.

i appreciate the comments but after thinking over the weekend, i will probably just keep it running, the dont really cost me much and it saves putting mileage on the other car which is newish, so keeps the resale value up. ill keep the peugeot untill the mot and i will probably go for something a little larger, expert, transit vito (even blackcab) etc as i want to make a dayvan but have the ability to have 3+ seats.

When I bought my Berlingo I put a lot of time and effort into researching alternatives first, given that my biggest issue (pun intended) is being 6'6" in my boots, which rules out maybe 95% of all cars for me.

I was very tempted by a black cab; advice I can pass on from my research into them is that I began to notice photos of rear wheel arches in the ads, taken from the back with the boot lid up, but with no explanation - they were just some of the many photos. Then a couple of ads mentioned replaced rear wheel arches, some cheap offerings had rusty arches, and it became apparent that this is their weak spot in terms of body.

Another thing I found by chance was that models after a certain year jump up dramatically in terms of road tax - IIRC well over £300? I forget the year, maybe around 2005?, but you must check the Parkers website to get the tax for the model you're looking at.

Yes I am still tempted - LTIs are flooding the market now and at bargain prices, but that won't last forever and I bet they will become appreciating classics one day. In 2012 they brought out a limited edition Golden Jubilee model, in gold paint, and I did give that idea some thought. One sold long ago is still on eBay if you want to see an example - item 133145825379 and click 'see original ad'.

Perhaps more practicably, once I'd bought my Berlingo one of my neighbours treated his family to a Fiat Doblo crew van - I know nothing about them but I can't help drooling over its dimensions. If I was starting again I would check them out.

Another one which might suit you is what I had previously - a Ford Transit Tourneo Connect T230 1.8TDCi. It is not a van like an ordinary tranny, but is a large, spacious MPV with all the robustness of a proper van (very stable round tight bends at speed, even for passengers) - you could think of it as a generous 6/7 seat minibus rather than an MPV. I had to sell mine because of my size - I had the seat so far back that the B pillar blocked my view at T junctions and I had a few very close near misses pulling out of them, but if you're not 6'6 it might be just what you want. As an example (only), my one is now for sale at https://www.sterlingcarsales.co.uk/ (I have no connection with them - I even traded it in to a different dealer who passed it on to them).

The big downside is that, like this one, they all seem to be mobility conversions - getting one that isn't seems impossible. I had a nightmare trading it in because it simply doesn't exist in traders' databases, so they have no idea at all what the book price might be; in the end I only shifted it when a kindly dealer decided to take a punt on it.

Hope this helps.

LTI Taxi road tax can actually vary from £145 to £555 a year - one example from the many models: https://www.parkers.co.uk/lti/tx4/saloon...tax/#52721

That looks like a list done by a picky tester, just get some waxoil brushed on it and the rust will disappear. Mine passed yesterday with some advisories for play in bushes, a job for next year when the weather picks up.
So where does this bit go then ?

i thought it was a picky tester and considering they was in south wales i thought it wouldnt be that bad (considering the amount of bad roads they have round there) but tbh if i get the wheel bearing done as it sounds like a plane taking off around 40mph, and the windscreen done it should be good to go for another year as it drives fine for a 1.9D van. windscreen will set me back £75 from my insurance company as it doesnt affect NCB.
