Hi everyone, good post from jimbo, I notice a few members have asked about changing the cambelt on a 1900 diesil berlingo, I have just had to change one.
A bit of a strange thing happened one of the pulleys on the auxillary drive belt siezed and this caused the belt to overheat and disintergrate it made no noise but got itself wrapped around the cambelt lower pulley underneath the cambelt, believe it or not there was no way I could remove it even with the crank pulley removed.The only way forward was to cut the cambelt and start from there, the new belt wasn't too difficult to fit but as you all know theres not a lot of room to work in I will do a post on this as soon as I get a bit of time.

Hi from Denmark !
Ive got the Peugeot 1.6 HDI 75 hp version , I guess this is a similar job.
Its time for a new belt , and had planned to let the Peugeot dealer do it. When they gave me the price quote for the job , I almost had a seizure !
I have other cars that I tinker with , and I am an old car mechanic , so I found this excellent how-to , and signed up.

2 questions:

What is the tq setting used for the lower pulley bolt ?
The locking pins used in the kit , are they really nessecary ?
Being real cheap , I guess drill bits of the proper sized could be used , huh ?

Drill bits should be fine
Accessories drive pulley (*)
Pre-tighten to 3,5 ± 0,4 daNm
Angular tighten to 190 ± 5 °

or as I did very tight with thread lock

My nephew have a 1.6 hdi 407 , and theyll probably come in handy , when he is up for a new belt ....

Ok , tools are bought , and Im getting ready to do this in a week or so......One question , though : One of the pins in the kit is supposed to be used for locking the crank/flywheel , right?

I really cant see where its supposed to be put in , after searching for hours on the net.
Am I right in thinking that the lower pulley for the cam belt on the 1.6 HDI is locked on the crank , and not able to move on us all , when changing the belt ?

In your pics , before the bolt is reattached onto the lower belt wheel ,( without pulley) it looks as though the wheel is locked in correct position on the crank ?

I guess you couldnt turn the engine after the new belt was fitted , without completing everything , if the lower cam belt wheel could turn on the crank , untill the bolt/pulley was torqued up.....

Havent done it yet , its at 125 k km´s , and my college are at 170 k km´s with out doing it, so.......Wifey uses it for over 200 km´s a day , and I havent been able to get it long enough.....

I understand that the peg you describe locks the position of the timing belt pulley at the crank. Maybe Im a bit dense , but my kit with pegs includes 4 pegs , and shows the fattest one in the kit (on a rather poor drawing) to be inserted through a hole under the block , in the bellhousing , looks to be over the flex portion on the downpipe.

Everybody say that these french engines have a pulley that needs to be locked i position against the block , and the crank should be locked against the block too , because the lower pulley is only held ( to the crank ) by the torque of the bolt. If this is true , its certainly nessecary to lock the crank with the 4´th pin , or there is risk that the pulley and crank doesnt line up........Know if this could be true ? I know Renaults are like this....

Haynes (mis) Guide says the crankshaft should be locked with a 12mm rod in the flywheel casing and the hole in the flywheel only to enable the crankshaft pulley bolt to be undone. It does not set the crankshaft at TDC. That will be what the thick pin in the kit is for?Once the crankshaft pulley bolt is undone and removed the pin is redundant until time to refit pulley and bolt. this is only for the auxillary belt pulley the timming belt pulley is not taken off.
