[Transmission] gearbox rattling : bearing?

Hi all,

When I depress the clutch pedal , in neutral, there is a rattling noise coming from the gearbox. When I release the pedal the sound is completely gone.
The Haynes manual states this is most likely caused by a bad/worn input shaft bearing(s).

However, there is no play in the input shaft up-down. There is play when I turn the shaft (anti)clockwise ( probably normal? )
Should I remove the front cover supporting the shaft,would that make a difference ?

If there's no apparent play on the input shaft could it still be worn (on bearings) and being the cause of the rattling noise?

I rather avoid opening up the gearbox if there is no need to

Maybe the clutch release thrust bearing. I'm guessing there's no noise with the clutch pedal down when it's in gear with the engine running?

Indeed no noise when the car is in gear and the clutch pedal down. The thrust bearing,and clutch, will be renewed now the box is removed.
( Haynes states the noise is apparent when the thrust bearing is worn and the clutch is depressed. However there is noise/rattling when the clutch is released (in neutral). )

Just been thinking about the symptoms you're getting. If the car is in gear & the pedal is down the gearbox will be not be turning. Maybe also worth looking at the bearing that sits in the flywheel 'primary motion / input shaft bearing'. If that has worn, you'll be getting similar noises.

The thrust bearing seems to be worn badly? I suppose it should be the same shape as the new one?
   
   
   

Probably the cause of the problem..I'll update when she's up and running again

Different shape is a red herring.

The old bearing is clearly clapped out
