Breakdown cover
#1
Hi guys who we using for breakdown cover nowadays

Just want relay if all goes wrong and the RAC are being, well pathetic on the price considering ive been with them for years and never called them out.

When i explained that there have been 2 occasions in 2 years i could have called them out and i repaired the vehicle myself to save calling them out. He said "you should have done" trying to explain how much money i had saved them was a waste of time.

So im leaving the RAC but where are we getting good service - needed for my berlingo and motorcycle.

Thanks in advance

No idea about the motorcycle but I use two companies AutoAid for the cars and AutoHome for the horsebox/caravan combo. Been with both for about two decades  and used both (albeit ten years ago or so).

AutoAid put us up for the night & supplied a rental car to get us home.
Autohome twice called out to crap problems and got me started or recovered (1983 Range Rover need I say more)

AutoAid changes prices/terms annually so read the small print - currently £60 year covers you + spouse in ANY car (plus standard trailer/caravan) - I like it for the any car bit.
AutoHome can provide weird cover (horseboxes, motor homes, competition moto lorries + caravan etc etc) and are worth ringing up to chat to direct if you have a slightly 'different' vehicle/combo - my car + horse trailer cover there has morphed into horse van/lorry now horse van/lorry + caravan/horse trailer. Plus they've just started doing a (small) ncb system so my annual premium has stayed unchanged this year.

i have it through my bank - also get travel insurance and mobil phone insurance as part of the deal

Think it costs about £15 a month for the account but thats both me and the wife. The cover is on the person not the vehicle so if you were to break down in a mates car they'll still come to sort it.

I don't need it in the van because citroen have built in a Sim card to the head unit and i just have to press the breakdown button above my head - this sends them the details and location!

For my bike, I took the breakdown option from Swinton, for my car I've been taking the option from NFU, both are about £20 IIRC and have the relay to home or destination. Not used either yet, but the NFU use RAC...

We have been with Autoaid for several years as they cover the driver no matter what you are in / on - Ive used them once to recover my car after it was written off by a rear ending from a Kia SUV and once when my X9-500 went all Italian and fried the ECU on the M61 leaving me with 200 kilos of paperweight at the side of the road. Had it recovered and dropped off at home, I could have had it taken to a dealers but given that the ECU ( and locks/ keys that were needed to get it mobile again) cost more than the bike was worth it got stripped.

So yes, Autoaid will recover your bike ( but dont offer roadside repairs AFAIK) - my wife used them once to start her car after she left the lights on and flattened the battery.
