For the last 14 years we have run a non fap 2.0 hdi C8 as the family bus. Its been mostly fine though last year needed a new DMF and clutch.
We have decided to replace it with a K9 Bingo having owned a first gen berlingo 17 years back and driven the 1.2 Puretech XL.
So we know the trim that we want XL Flair. Colour wise, not too fussed though the better half doesn't like white or black.
Got to be a manual box too.
Debating on the engine. The better half said she found the Puretech hesitant at times on the extended test drive. She described it as coughing.
She also wants the most HP she can get as loaded up with 5 of us. Bikes and canoes even the C8 struggled at times and that had been remapped to 160HP.
Im thinking of the 130HP DV5R engine with a stage one remap before next summer but these seem hard to come by nearly new. Far more of the 100HP ones for sale.
Im interested in real world opinions of both the petrol and diesel. In all honesty both of us are leaning towards the diesel engine which I gather is a smaller version. Of the older 1.6 HDi DV6. Hopefully the turbo issues of the older DV6 have now been addressed with the revisions and don't affect the DV5R
Cheers for any thoughts.

Seems to be the opinion of most people I speak to, though Im wary of the DV5 given the DV6 and its history of self destructing and eating its own turbo.
The DW10 that we currently have has been incredibly reliable, even better than the XU7D and XU9D of old, just a shame the rest of the car is now starting to show its age and drop to bits around the engine!
Having chatted to the missus its defo got to be an XL Flair, in any colour other than black or white and the 6 speed 130HP engine. Currently there only seems to be one on autotrader and thats black ( I like it, but the missus whos car it will be doesnt).

Cheers - Information both from 2 chaps I know who work within Citroen garages and from some odd anecdotal internet evidence the pre 2015 DV6 engine seemed to be more prone to lunching its turbo than the post 2015 though quite why I am unsure - again "tales" heard are that the engine received some modification to address the issues that lead to premature failure, though as I will discuss Im not sure what this was and whether its related to what I feel is one of the issues.
I gather there were factors that contributed to the early demise of some engines ( and infrequent or incorrect grade oil changes seems be be one cause, also leaky injector seals seems to be the main cause which in turn cause carbon build up to block the metal gauze internal filter and eventual oil starvation of the turbo) but I do totally get your point that the DV6 is in use in a LOT of vehicles not just PSA and if it was a huge issue there would be a lot more bad press about.
My own experience with the DV donkey is very limited - I have far more experience with the XUD and DW10 engines (& the DW10C isnt without its issues) and a limited amount with the TUD (woefully weak in early ally 1.4 guise but much better in the later 1.5 incarnation with the cast block). I think Im wary of anything small producing a large amount of power and always have a niggling thought going on that small highly stressed engines will go pop sooner rather than later.
I mean there are pros and cons to any design, the DV6 did away with the lift pump on that engines like the DW10 had, I havent seen anything regarding the DV5 but imagine this to be the same ( try doing the lift pump on a C8 - about as much fun as having live scampi put down your pants). I know from some inspection work on a DV6 that a mate was doing the timing belt on that the engine design uses the same 2 M8 bolts per injector post for the cam cover that it does for securing the centre cam head into place which causes some headaches when trying to change the cam belt as removal of the cam cover will disturb the injector tube upper oil seal and this in turn if not addressed can cause leaky injectors and the carbon build up issue. Which leads me to wonder if some of the issues with engines failing is in part due to this disturbance when changing the timing belt. But Im rambling.
As I mentioned earlier - smaller more stressed engines make me more worried than huge lazy engines. Im interedted to read on peoples comments about the 1.2 "coughing" as the missus said she felt it [the 1.2 she test drove] do that on the town legs of the test drive.

I have the 1.2 engine have done 20,000 miles the odd cough that's about it no other problems for me the petrol is a better choice but only do short trips with a TD engine you need to do longer trips to keep the dPf clean if you don't it will cost you big 2,000 plus and it will keep blocking if you don't do long trips thats why I got petrol all engines have to meet EU laws so don't expect to get high miles from any of them in this day and age.

Once a week we blart up the M6 to the Lakes so the cars do get a decent "Italian tune up" and having briefly dipped our toe with a Zafira 1.9TDi with a DPF of doom Im no stranger to these things.
I seem to hear less problems though from those cars that run with ad-blue than those that did without any additives or used Eloys
Or I could just spend a ridiculous amount on the C8 which has been reliable engine wise... But where is the fun in that?

The later 8 valve diesel 1.6 Diesel engines are very good, we see very few problems with them, if they have issues, it’s probably the adblue system on the euro6 versions.
Personally I would have one of these all day long above a petrol. The 1.2 petrol is so laggy off the mark, I personally couldn’t live with it in a Berlingo. Many people would find it perfectly fine, but it’s better suited to a small hatch rather than a great brick like the Berlingo.
Starting to get quite a few issues with the 1.2 petrol as well.
Cambelts are shredding & blocking the oil pick up.had quite a few of these now. Catalytic converters splitting, misfire issues, bad oil consumption.
