Power steering fluid
#1
Hi guys, looked and looked in my book and can’t see what specific power steering fluid I need? Citroen said DA fluid as it’s an electric pump but are there any others I can use as the DA one isn’t available to collect today? It’s a 2015 van.

I have a 2016 Blue HDI Feel with electric pump and it is LDS fluid the power steering uses. I went to motor factors and they tried to give me the old stuff from the belt driven pump system but when i check colour i knew something was up. I eventually called citroen to enquire and they confirmed it was LDS. I just had the rack changed 4 weeks ago and it was refilled with LDS and no problems.

Looking around i see DA and LDS appears to be the same spec of fluid so it is probably correct.

Cheers, got the DA. How come you had the rack changed? I’m so experiencing some vibration when I go round corners so don’t know if I’m heading that way too.

Hi there Ashmarch,

My car is used as a private hire taxi and it’s shifted with my dad working it at night. That added to fact it’s mainly airport transfers i do means I’ll hammered 271K on it already. I’m guessing the rack was just a case of wear and tear. However my old Berlingo (2010) has 325k and never touched the rack on it so who knows. Anyway about 6 months ago it started going tight and juddering as I turned. It needed a top up so done that and it improved slightly but then got steadily worse over 4 months. Then one day it went away weirdly but could still be felt when turning the rack through on a ramp. About 4 weeks after this it started going tight again so checked the tank and I was low. Topped it up again but about 1 hour later low again put about a litre in to it on one night to get me finished and just took it home. Next day it was dry so I had a look and every time it was on lock fluid was squirting and dribbling out the ends of the gators deffo sign that the seals are well gone. So ordered a new rack but some places are funny money for them. The rack on this one is exactly the same as the 2010. As a result most places would not give me a price because it was not old enough for aftermarket. So I went and picked up a rack for the old one and they fitted that with no problems. When you check the part numbers they match so it’s not a big deal but there is two different racks on them.

I would say in my experience that vibration tends to be mechanical things like track rods and rod ends, tracking and balancing etc. However if you needing to top up that’s deffo not a good sign as the system is maintenance free. Generally if your topping up it will be leaking from somewhere.
