'04 2.0 Hdi rough running
#1
Hello all,
New to the forum though I have owned a berlingo for a year. I bought the first berlingo van after my low miles no rust Escort van was written off by a texting driver. The first Berlingo is an '04 2.0hdi that had been sitting for a couple of years. I grew to enjoy the van, it ran very well pulled well and was pretty nippy. Sadly it won't pass its MOT without a ton of money spent on it and a lot of welding which I am not prepared to do. I picked up another '04 van to replace it with today assuming that they were the same and that I could use the old one for parts if needed. The new van is running like poop, no power a lot of the timeand feels like it is missing all the time, really pretty uncomfortable to drive, bordering on undrivable. I have done a little research and it looks like they used two different engine control systems, (what the heck s that all about!). Anyway I need to figure out what's what, is there an easy way to tell what control system I have on the vans and is there a fix for this issue. I really cannot believe the difference between the two vans they are like chalk and cheese. I don't want to drive this "new" van the way it is its absolutely terrible and could be dangerous given the lack of power to accelerate. Very much hoping I have not bought a pile of poop!
Any pointers would be much appreciated
Andrew

Welcome to the forum.
The 2.0 is normally a good engine, so you may have a simple problem, but without a bit more digging it's not really possible to be sure. It could be that the engine is going into Limp Mode, and that could be down to a number of things, but try starting by disconnecting the MAF & see if it makes a difference. There are a number of posts on here about it, but if you get stuck, I'm sure that someone will be able to help. An OBD code reader would also be of use, they're less than a fiver on eBay,.
The two different management systems, may be to do with the 1.6 vs the 2.0. 1.6 uses Bosch & 2.0 uses Siemens AFAIK.

Hello and thanks for the reply and the clarification. I think I was confused by the older posts that seemed to say that there were two control systems for the 2.0 and that a certain amount of rough running had to be put up with. To be honest that just didn't make much sense, my old van has 149k on the clock and didn't suffer with any rough running issues at all and still pulled really well, the rest of the van is another matter!
I will start to investigate and pick up an OBD reader.
For now I'm off to play with our 1915 Dunkirk little ship, Glala. Two Gardner 6lxb's so no electronics gubbins to worry about...

By control systems do you mean fuel systems? Siemens vs bosch? You can pop the bonnet to confirm what you have by checking the ECU manufacturer. Maybe the new one just needs some thrashing to get it going.

An update.
Thanks for the reply, it is a Siemens control, as I now believe are all 2.0 engines. (Some confusion from reading earlier posts while researching the issue.)
I swapped the MAF sensor from the old van which ran supremely well. Upon removal of the MAF from the new van I noticed that the bottom screw was missing after part removal from new van I found that the screw was indeed there and the MAF unit had been installed sitting on top of it. I installed the MAF properly and it has improved the running appreciably. Still has a pretty bad 'misfire' but it is at least drivable and, fingers crossed has not gone into 'limp home' mode again since.
hopefully the OBD reader will throw some light on the remaining issue,
Thanks again
