Its not the usual vapour and has a distinct burnt smell too it. I have no obvious oil leaks or fuel leaks and if I did it can't be big because it only smokes white on cold start up.
If it smokes white and runs rough (like misfiring) from cold your first step is to check the glow plugs are all working.

Glow plugs are next on my list. I've been holding off because it starts fine. Hot or cold. Just the idle fluctuates until you run it for a bit and during this time it smokes white. I chucked a new (used) mas sensor in an hour ago before I started the engine today and it didn't change anything. It also contains the air intake temp sensor so I was hoping but no luck.

And thanks for the info on blanking plates. It could well be worth a shot just to come up with a diagnosis. Anyone used a carbon cleaning company? They run something through like hydrogen or something but I've never known anyone to have it done.

I had the same issue, search for my thread
Can't find it on the phone at the moment, this site doesn't load properly on my S9 (hangs off th edge of th screen) but the egr blank plate fixed it after new glow plugs, relay, loads of other stuff I tried. Might help to read through what I did.
