Beefing up security????

Anyone got any ideas on beefing up the tailgate security on a 06 berlingo van.
Found out on a recent trip to the UK that the rear doors dont put up much of a fight against a scumbag with a sharp screwdriver. Very nearly lost my livliehood outside an asda on the pudsey rd in leeds.
Anyone got any suggestions please?????????

I got a 4" square of stainless plate 2mm thick, welded a 12mm bolt to it, removed the lock and using a similar 4" square plate with a hole in it, put it on the inside, bolted the bugger on, had to do this after some scumbag screwdrivered my lock out!
