Various oddities
#1
Hi. I have a these various problems still remaining on my little van that I'd like to tackle if possible. If anyone has had been there and done it, it would be great to hear it. This is the list, in order of annoyance.

1. Milometer and speedo don't work for 20% of the time and sometimes when they are off the turbo doesn't work. Oh and the drivers side window stops working too. Passengers side doesn't change. I read that it could be a sensor behind the gearbox? Cars are odd.

2. Rough startup from cold. It chucks out white smoke until its hot which I assume is an excess of fuel not getting used. Injectors are all sealed up dry and as it runs fine hot I'm guessing that rules injectors out so I'm thinking either glow plugs or a sensor?

3. Not sure if this is a problem or not but when I shut the van down after running it makes an electrical noise from the Engine somewhere. Best way I can describe it is 2 seconds of electical whine followed by a click. This happens a few times for about 30 seconds I guess. I got it into my head if I change the glow plug relay I might solve two birds with one stone but I'm just guessing. Anybody experienced a noise like that?

Oh and does anyone know what that lttle sensor is next to the fuel primer? It has a braided cable running to a small plastic cap with little slots in it. Mine had so much junk in it I don't think it could have been working. I cleaned it up the best I could but no difference to anything.

If you put your vehicle and engine details in your signature like at the bottom of my post then we won't have to ask you what engine do you have?

Ours did that as does the Mini - sometimes the Mini does it when you open the bonnet and without the key in the ignition, just lived/live with it putting it down to PSA weirdness...

It wont be the glow plug relay as it shuts off after the engine is started, once the engine is running there's no need for it.

1/ theres a sensor at the back of the gearbox for the speedo, if not working properly would affect the  speedo but I doubt if it would affect the turbo ?

2/ White smoke could mean glow plugs not all working , or the advance /retard solenoid on old type fuel injection pump not working

The last one (braided cable with plastic end cap) is the turbo solenoid relief pipe that comes from the turbo solenoid at the back of the engine. It should be clean.

White smoke from the exhaust could mean steam, ie an internal water leak (blue is fuel and black is oil). The electric whine followed by a click after turnoff could be the rad electric fan? If both are right then maybe you're losing coolant into the engine when parked up, which then burns off once it gets hot?

On the 1.6 hdi the glow plugs post heat for 3 minutes or until the coolant is at 60 ish degrees C, whichever comes first.

It'll be a 1.6 hdi like my old m59 and was plagued with the smoke when started cold issue. Fit an egr blank plate, works wonders. Lots of folk had that issue on BMW minis, fiestas and focus as well as the Berlingo with the same engine.

The noise ( I had it too) was i think, the ECU trying to close the egr at shutdown and it was stuck open.

Hey, sorry for the delay, the blooming winds took out my Internet and power for a while. Oh and even the water as well. Back to the stone ages.

Thanks for all the help people...

I should have indeed stated it was a 1.6 hdi... Putting it in the sig is defo a good Idea ?

Problem 1.
I think I will have to change this sensor behind the gearbox and see if it works. The only other specifically related post I found was actually on this site and was what let me to it. If you're interested you can find that here.. https://www.berlingoforum.com/thread-13142.html The fourth post down by ians lingo is my specific issue and hopefully my fix.

Problem 2.
Its not the usual vapour and has a distinct burnt smell too it. I have no obvious oil leaks or fuel leaks and if I did it can't be big because it only smokes white on cold start up. I'm thinking it could be on of injectors slightly leaking or something but there's no visual signs up top. When I replaced the seals previously I didn't clean the seat very well as I didn't have a tool. I might lift them back out and use a proper seat cleaner to see if it solves the issue. A job for the weekend.

Problem 3.
Thanks for your input Zion, that's certainly given me a route to explore. It also certainly sounds like something is trying to happen or engage but the Egr never came to mind. I have certainly heard of people fitting blanking plates but I don't know enough about it. Is it legal? And more importantly can I do it myself? It would be great if it solved the cold start up issue too!

And big thanks to saskak, I gave up trying to find out what it was. It was so dirty I can't believe it was doing anything at all but at least now I can have a look on google and see if it's showing any symptoms.

Putting a blanking plate between the EGR and block of engine is pretty easy to do, search ebay for a cheap blanking plate or make your own from a beer/coke can. It is more than likely that EML (engine management light) will be lit for the 1.6HDi or at least it does on my 1.6HDi and an error logged. I would not comment on the legality/morality, but the EML will be an MOT failure. Cleaning the EGR is worth a try (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wTQtVJEqGXI).

If the turbo solenoid pipe ending was really dirty that no air was able to escape you will end up with turbo overboost, limp mode, etc., as you have not seen this, I guess it was ok, but it should definitely be free of dirt and unblocked.
