[Brakes] Bleeding problems
#1
Hello, please help

My 1.9d failed its MOT on rear brake inbalance the other day with the n/s rear not pulling up on the footbrake.
The wheel cylinder has gone so I changed that and the shoes and all bled up nicely.

However, after doing the same on the o/s I got some fluid through but this kept having air in it. The reservoir was topped up and kept checked but then I was getting no more fluid through. I am also now getting a clunk on the footpedal when depressing it.
The back end was on axle stands - I read that you should lift the front when bleeding ?

Anyway, I now have no brakes and have to get the re test by Saturday.

Any ideas how to bleed it and what the clunk may be ??

Thanks

Did you pressure bleed the brakes?

Yes lift the front as there is a baffle that is very high in the reservoir and the fluid stays in the front but the back empties and you start drawing air.

So yes you must lift the front.

This, it's a pain in the arse. Make sure you jack both wheels up....

If you do NOT have ABS then there is a load limiting valve that reduces the fluid/braking pressure to the back brakes. This is to stop the back wheels skidding when heavy braking with a light load.

As you had the rear end on jacking stands the valve is reducing, possibly stopping the fluid reaching the back brakes, it thinks there is no load in the back and so stops the fluid/braking power. They cannot be bled in that position.
The clunk may be the inner working of the valve moving to restrict the fluid, which may mean the spring is not broken.

If the spring that controls the valve is broken then the lever on the valve needs to be put in a position to simulate a heavy load in the back to allow fluid to reach the cylinders.

Thank you for your replies

I lifted the front and re bled the system with a pressure kit.
I got it through the MOT but I'm not happy with the pedal travel. I will bleed it again but this time I will do the order nsr, osr, nsf and osf, which is different from the manual which says do the os before the ns.
Any thoughts ?
