ignition lock ggrrrrrrrrr
#1
Hi all, thought I would ask the citroen experts.
My son has got what I believe to be a B9 berlingo van 1.6 hdmi 2014.
Ignition lock has given up, had a new key cut, it works but a hard jiggle is needed, he commutes about hour and half away and I'm concerned it will pack in altogether.
Doing some research I think there are 2 different types of ignition barrel, could you confirm.
I'm hoping I can get a lock and key from breakers and I need to know how to tell the difference between the both types.
Many thanks for your help.
Ps  I'm sure I will be asking g advise on quite a few things

Hi there, welcome to the forum!

The keys themselves are radio code transmitters once placed in the barrel, and the van will not start with the key and barrel from a breaker. Old keys also generally cannot be reprogrammed in most cars as they are one time program devices. There's a wire loop that powers a tiny RFID chip in the key body that contains a security code. The immobiliser reads that code, if it's wrong, then you will never start the van or car.

That's not to say a new key and barrel can't be done, of course it can by the right folk at the right price (auto locksmith or Citroen - ouch) but you can't pitch up to the scrappy and grab a part any more where this is concerned. Sorry mate.

I'd look for a local automotive locksmith and get a quote to supply a new barrel and programmed key. You may be able to buy the keys pre programmed from a code online or copied from your existing key (Timpsons can do that) but getting a new matching barrel is the issue here.

From the date of your van, you do have a B9. You can check the correct part number for the lock & barrel by looking on service.citroen.com or catcar.info using your VIN to identify the vehicle. A Citroen dealer would do much the same, but may not be willing to give you the part number. Sometimes, you can get a written quote for the part from a dealer which will have the part number.
When I was looking at getting a new door lock a while ago, the part numbers suggested that you can get a generic lock, or a lock which matches the existing keys, I have no idea what that would cost though.

I can't see why if you had a 2nd hand ignition barrel complete with key why you couldn't use it and get it to work.

You would need to use the existing key circuit board (and RFID chip if not incorporated into the circuit board) in the 2nd hand key or just swap the key blade from the 2nd hand key to the old key.

The ignition barrel is mechanical, the wire loop that powers the RFID chip in the key isn't part of the barrel.

Thanks everyone.
Well, I was lucky enough this morning to find a berlingo at a local breakers, I removed the lock by cutting a grove in the snap off security bolt and unscrewed it.
I fitted the new ignition lock, i then mad a small hole in the lower cowl cover and securely stuck the pick up ring.
Now he places the old key through the hole I cut and uses tused the 2nd hand lick and key to crank.
Job done for 40 quid.. not ideal bit he intends to keep the van for a long time .

Why can't you just swap the blade on the 2nd hand key onto the original key and use it as normal?

Using either of the above mentioned methods will eliminate the use of 2 keys.

The 2nd hand key is a full standard key, his original keys are part of a remote key. I didnt want to break up the 2nd hand key to look.. are they the same key blades then then fit into remote flip out keys.??
I will defo swap them if they are

Ahh I see.

Not sure if the blades are the same as my remote key isn't a filp out version.

You could buy a new blank blade to fit the flip out key and and have it cut using the 2nd hand key as the patten, you could probably get that done locally, if not there are places that cut the blade from a photograph... like the one below.
