Funny, mine is the 1.6 HDi and it sits about 2000 rpm at 70 mph... Never feels strained or low geared in 5th.

It's a BVM5 and specific code is BVM BE4 L from the factory build sheet. Could be just above 2k at 70 but not by much. I came to this van from a 2010 Audi A3 TDi 2.0 with a 6 speed and didn't notice it suddenly being a screamer. My wife's BMW mini by contrast is really low geared and screams at around 3200 rpm at 70. Drives me nuts if I have to drive it on the motorway.
Have you checked the speed with GPS to see if the Speedo is actually out of calibration? You could be doing nearer 80 lol. My van at an indicated 70 is actually around 67 by GPS indication. It's within the legal calibration limit and better to read slightly low than too high.

I dont think my 1.6hdi van needs a 6 speed box - certainly at legal speeds anyway

I don't suppose the OP has low profile tyres on his van which might account for the higher revs at 70?

Nah cos the Speedo would still match the rpm as before, but the actual speed would be wrong to an observer...i.e. GPS. But to the driver it would look the same.
Wait, you could be onto something if the Speedo is taken from the abs sensor reading on one wheel, but not if it comes from the gearbox...

Me either. Quite calm at 70 actually.

the later vehicles -100 hdi adblue wagons appear to have the same gear ratio in 5th as the 6 speed does in 6th. Hence why they're supposed to be good on juice.
My previous 65 plate 1.6 hdi 92bhp was higher revving by a long way over my current K9 van 100bhp
My wife has the six speed C4 Picasso grand semi auto box and the revs on that in sixth match the revs on my van in 5th doing the same speed
