Gearbox/Drive shaft leak
#1
Found a small pool of oil on the floor where my van had been parked up. Upon closer inspection i found this.

I don't have my haynes book on me right now,

Can someone give me the lowdown on what it will take to repair?

The driveshaft will need to be pulled out, then the old seal can be removed & a new one inserted. That looks like the driver's side, if so there's a carrier bearing half way along the shaft?
I've not worked on that side so not 100% sure what's involved but am guessing you'll need to separate the bottom ball joint from the wishbone before the shaft will pull out.

Yup, That's right, it's the drivers side. Carrier Bearing looks fun...:/

Not difficult job, undo the driveshaft nut with vehicle on the floor first !! Lube the driveshaft with spray oil where it goes into the hub should make it slide easier.
Shaft bearing is ok and no sweat.

Thanks.

I got mine from Euro Car Parts last year. They had seals for both sides last time I looked.

To separate bottom ball-joint, remove a nut and bolt going through the end of the lower arm. Bolt MUST be removed as it intersects the peg for the ball joint.
Take a long plank and place under the carpointing from gearbox and out, wrap a cargo strap around it and the lower arm. Secure properly. Jump onto end of plank...

Note that the peg from the ball joint is cylindrical, with no taper. When reassembling, be careful that it doesn't go too far through the lower arm. If it does you'll crush the rubber seal on it. Seal not available separately...

At least that's how it it is on my M49.

Check the gators on the driveshafts and also the seal on the ball joint while you're messing about. I mean, if you're pulling an axle, it can't hurt to check them, anyway.
you can get two-part gators that you fit with the axle in situ, then glue the halves together, but no. Not getting anywhere near my car with them.

I assume that you've already gotten a can of gear oil.
