intermittent fuel supply
#1
hello, i'm new here so apologies if i get this process wrong!

i have a mid 90's mk2 berlingo 2.0 hdi

recently the car died on me whilst travelling, like it had run out of fuel.

looked under the bonnet and used the primer bulb which fist showed bubbles and then diesel passing along fuel pipe.

i pumped it a little too much and diesel came out through the seal on top of the fuel filter, which indicated no leak in the pipe or the pressure would have been lost though the leak.

engine started and i managed to drive a couple of miles to where i was going.

when i left feor home, engine died again, same thing happened and i managed to get home the 12 miles by re-doing the primer bulb process about 3 or 4 times (lucky roads were quiet due to lockdown here in spain, i was doing my once a week shopping trip).

did not go into limp mode and i did an ecu scan but no faults except one i have had for ages which is one of the 2 redundant sensor circuits from the butterfly on the intake having failed (i reset the fault now and again, i appreciated one day the other will go and i may well be in trouble!).

only other fault i have seen is sometimes when i am driving at high altitude (mountains) the cat warning light comes on for a while but resets when at lower level.

any ideas?

thanks.

steve.

Welcome to the forum. Do you mean a mid 00's 2.0 HDi?
I think your fuel filter seal may be faulty or not seating properly. So far as the Cat light is concerned, i'm not sure.

There is an electrical fuel pump in your fuel tank. That may be the root of the problem.
The seal on top of the filter is now damaged but should be easy enough to fix.

You should be able to hear the electric pump working when the ignition is switched on .
Not sure about your model but there is a cut off switch for the electric pump in case of an accident under the bonnet , maybe faulty ?

Happy to be corrected, but AFAIK, there's no electric pump in the tanks of the 2.0HDi, and possibly also the 1.6HDi.

but surely there's no pump in the tank as far as i know as it's diesel and has a mechanical fuel pump on the engine. i have never heard a pump 'whirr' on my berlingo when ignition turned on (i have heard on other cars i have owned that had electric pump).

fuel pump seal being faulty would lead to it leaking all the time? only leaked a bit when i gave that primer bulb too much 'oomph', which created a high fuel pressure?

happy to be proved wrong!

apologies.
just did some browsing on t'internet, it seems there is a low pressure pump in tank that feeds the high pressure pump. so my pumping the primer must have provided enough fuel for a few miles, weird i have never heard it kick in when i turn ignition on (had it 12 years).

very confusing as depending where you look, some say have a low pressure pump to feed high pressure pump. some say no way my model even has a primer bulb! then again, some say citroen make it up as they go along!

On the 2 litre model it depends which fuel system you have:
- Bosch has a suppy pump in the tank
- Siemens does not have a suppy pump

sadly mine is a siemens system, which explains why it has a primer bulb. wish it was a bosch, better system, easier to get parts.
