Hi, my 2002 berlingo 1.9 diesel, lost power and stopped working.
The mechanic said it was the ERG valve.
He disconnected the whole unit and it drove (although noisely) back to my house.
Has anyone. Had experience of working on this.
I have gathered a little info, but not enough to know what to do.
I have read snippets of info, that you can discover the vacuum pipe. And or blank off the exhaust smaller . pipe leading to the valve EGR unit.
Does anyone have any info on this issue?
Many thanks gamble.

Remove the clip thing from the small pipe that comes from the exhaust and slip either a 2p or 10p coin in , fits great between the small pipe from the exhaust and the EGR unit. Refit the clip.
( CAUTION , if its too small it could be sucked into the engine )
Biggest problem is sometimes getting the clip off or getting it back on without breaking it.
As long as the small black vacuum pipes are blocked off there should not be a problem. sticking a screw into it should do the trick.
It adds a bit of oomph .

Thanks brodfather11 for your reply.
I have glude a ten pence piece onto ERG housing, ready to fit onto the small exhaust tube.
Have ordered a hose plliers to help me get that clip on.
On my ERG valve unit it looks as though it has TWO pipe connecters.
But I only noticed One tube leading from the CPU 'area'.
I have taken it off.
The mechanic said to keep the electrical connection on, as it will cause a fault light.
What I can't understand, is that when I pushed a large screwdriver through the entry hole. It took a lot of pressure to move the valve into the body of housing. More pressure then exhaust gases could do I would have thought.
Another query is even if that small valve was open and sending exhaust gases back into the combustion. It is hard to see that stoping an engine.
Anyway if you have an more throughouts on the subject I will be glad to hear.
Thanks from gamble

The EGR valve is electrically operated, the exhaust gases don't push it open or closed. It opens to a position determined & controlled by the ECU to mix the right amount of exhaust gas with the intake air to reduce emissions (NOx etc)
If the intake butterfly flap is closed when it shouldn't be, and you get full EGR & no air, then it would stall the engine.
Make sure your intake butterfly is operating properly, opening fully on running and closing on stopping. Its an anti-shudder valve (ASV) if fitted, but also helps to throttle EGR gases by restricting intake air to force the EGR gases to flow into the intake. If it (ASV) shuts when your engine is running, it will instantly stall. I'm sure the 1.9D has one adjacent to the EGR unit.
