Hi all, since I have had the van, (Jan) I've felt the clutch is really heavy to press. It works fine, never slips - slightly juddery when cold as you pull away but that quickly disappears and its not the first car I've had that particular issue on and mostly I have learned to avoid it.
However, when I had the Audi A3 TDi (2010 shape) it had a feather light clutch, a thing of beauty it was (the clutch) and compared to my missus' BMW Mini, was a treat to use. Her car always felt like you were pressing on a tennis ball as the clutch was pretty heavy for a small car and my 2.0 one was so nice and easy to push.
Well, when I got the van, it was a really heavy clutch action compared to the Audi (I traded the A3 in against the van so jumped from one into the other) and I gradually just got used to it. Then I drove her car again, it felt light and easy! Now going between the two, the van clutch is a beast to press down compared to hers. Like pressing a rubber swimming pool brick (remember those from school?)
I know it will be hydraulic, it never creaks or groans, operation is good if a little eager to come up under foot. So much so, I used to keep my heel planted in the Audi and use my ankle joint to let the clutch up. In the van, I need to lift my thigh instead to keep enough weight on it or it just pushes my foot out of the way and over comes the strength of the ankle joint easily.
Is this how everyone's clutch is on the 1.6 HDi? Its the 9HN engine variant with standard manual 5 speed box. I really would like it lighter and often wonder now I have time on my hands, if the helper spring is maybe the wrong one, not looked at the pedals at all so could be something wrong but it swings through the arc of movement pretty well, no binding. The van has covered only 61500 miles and has always been used as a car, so probably the original clutch. The pedal is slightly higher than the brake pedal, about 30mm and this makes me wonder about it being all in good shape, though it bites at what seems the right point, about half way up.
Her mini bites about an inch from the top, has only done 57k from new but age is getting the better of her car as it is an 06 so getting well on now. Plus she drives with her foot on the clutch pedal, all the time. She's never driven the van yet. I take my foot off the pedal every time I change gear.
Another thing is what masquerades as a foot rest, an angled (down to the right) hump in the carpet - would really like to have a regular flat solid footrest that is inclined slightly forward like I had in other cars. Is there a model like the C4 that has one which can be fitted?
