Annoying problem with Berlingo, Maybe someone can help.
Patient: Berlingo 1.6 Petrol, 2005
I have a problem from time to time to start the car. It drives well, starts with no problem, no battery issues, however, from time to time car doesn't want to start at all (there is no symptom of low battery). At first, I thought it is the battery, but all electronics work, no problems with the lights or controls in any way.
When you turn the key in the ignition everything works but there is no sign of engine wanting to start and you cannot hear starter at all. Nothing happens. Recently I have noticed that when I shut the bonnet not being gentle, it did it again. The only thing that helps is a push start.
Is there any security feature that prevents the engine from starting?
Any ideas?
I have checked earth connections and restarted bsi.
It was starting fine until i have closed bonnet not being gentle. The same thing happened again. Everything is fine just the engine won't start. I can hear some clicking but no life.
Cleaned terminals on the battery too.
Have to push it again to start from gear and after that all back to normal.
Help please.

Your starter could be sticking as Ron says, or the ignition barrel is crumbling inside. If you hear rapid heavy clicking when trying to start, I'd suspect the starter motor and pre engagement solenoid first. If it's silent, try a replacement ignition barrel and key.

Sounds like brushes sticking in the starter motor or a dead spot. Can you get to the starter to tap it with a hammer, don't beat it just gently tap the casing then try it on the key.
So where does this bit go then ?

The reason not to hit the starter hard, is that it's a permanent magnet motor and has huge magnets bonded to the inside of the casing. If you whack it, you can shatter the magnets. Once that happens, it's game over for that starter.

I haven't done anything with the starter battery or even did not open the bonnet and the car started within seconds.
I just lef it overnight and voilà, it's alive!
It had sun shining on it, old battery problems?
I am puzzled

I'd maybe consider the ignition barrel internal switches to be an issue then. Dead batteries recover a small amount when left alone but not enough to be useable again without charging.
