[Steering & Suspension] Captive wishbone nut issue
#1
Hi all

Just putting a feeler out here to see if anyone has had problems grinding head off front wishbone bolt (on a 2004 multispace) after the captive nut tinny bitty has failed and it now spins. Appear to be two alternatives :

1. Grind off bolt head and drive remainder into subframe (and buy new bolt/nut etc)

2. Cut a bigger slot in subframe to get access for a spanner/mole grip on the bolt

My preference would be for first option but was wondering if it drove in fairly easily as it would be a little catastrophic if it jammed!

Grateful for any experiences on this, particularly with option 1

Thanks

The best option would be to do what I've already done. Stick weld it in place so you don't have to scrap the entire subframe. Yeah, it's a stupid design the way the nut is held by a tin and nothing is designed to fit that gap. No need to thank me, it's what I do...*tips fedora*

Hi - I did the cut and shove that you mention and also on the other side managed to get about six turns on the bolt then cut the bolt just in front of the nut using a pad saw and a lot of swearing.

I was unable to get a decent grip on the captive bolt with any of my tools.

In retrospect a dab weld would have been a better idea but I never thought of that at the time :-(

Sourcing new captive bolts was easy enough but I had to go to the local (one hour away) Peugeot dealer to get new bolts.
