Petrol 1.6 - timing belt or chain?
#1
Hi all,

Just want to double double triple check.

Peugeot Partner, 2010, 1.6 petrol.

Does it have a timing belt, or chain? Or some combination of both?

What is the replacement interval?

I ask as a garage tells me it has a chain that only needs to be replaced once it starts making noises - but I'm nervous that they're mistaken, there is a belt, and it is going to snap at some point costing me much ££!

If they are correct, and it is a chain, do I really not need to do anything until it starts making noises? And any comments on the noise it may make/other things to look out for?

Thanks,
Duane.

if its a chain i wouldn't bother touching it, they more than likely will outlast the engine unlike a rubber belt

Look your vehicle up on the catcar site.

Thanks, VIN is vf37j5fs09j316908 - from the above it looks like it has a timing chain.

I'm not " up " on the service interval but am " with " the school of thought for replacing it when needed as although chains don't usually snap they do stretch and the tensioners can wear, valve timing of course will then wander and any sensors relying on the feedback data will potentially throw up an error message.
I doubt the parts will be that expensive as they are only simplex.

We change at least 1 timing chain per month on these “Prince” engines as they are called.
It’s a psa/Bmw engine.
Most garages will tell you it is a Peugeot engine, blaming its unreliability on the manufacturer.
Personally I think it’s more Bmw than anyone else’s , simply because psa have not & do not make any other engine with a timing chain.
Anyway these chains fail mostly down to lack of oil changes & possibly running low on oil.
This particular engine seems to drink oil , 1 litre per 1000 miles is not unusual, so they are often ran very low on oil by careless owners.
They full set of parts from the dealer to replace the chain & vvt pulleys is about £250 + vat .
We charge the same to replace them.
I wouldn’t suggest changing it as a maintenance item, it will get noisy to begin with & due to very sensitive engine management, will light up the dashboard with the dreaded check engine light, to warn you soon enough.
I have replaced a chain on an RCZ at 17000 miles, but also have plenty with 60/70000 with no issues.

Great, thanks for the info.

Interestingly my check oil light has come on the other day, I checked the level and it seemed fine. Is the warning linked to the actual oil level, or just a periodic reminder?

My wife has the BMW Mini with this engine, it's a great wee runner but it drinks oil. The oil never gets dirty as we top it up every 2 or 3 months! It gets a full engine service yearly and the garage always comment on how clean the oil is....no wonder. As soon as the oil gets to the minimum level, it starts to get a bit tappety as the hydraulic lifters start to lightly chatter. We check the dip stick, sure enough it's back at min. A litre tops it up to max but I always put 8/10 of a litre in as a bit less is better than too much.

Oh and your level sensor is live, not a periodic check. If the dipstick shows level to be ok, the sensor could be failing.
