[Transmission] Gearbox Failure
#1
Hi Guys,

I've clocked up 30k miles in the car now will very little problem, not bad at all seeing its done 120k miles. Up until now. I think the gearbox has had it.

For a little while occasionally it had a problem in 2nd gear. It would go into gear but would not engage the drive, just spun gear wheels around. All other gears were fine and the clutch operated fine. The problem in 2nd gradually became worse and noticed that it only did it when changing into 2nd going up hill. Then it changed and is stuck in first. Clutch still works to disengage the drive. I can move the gearstick forwards and backwards only (1st and 2nd gear positions) but has no effect of moving it out of 1st. I thought/hoped that it might be a problem with the linkages, but after removing battery etc to view there doesn't seem to be a problem with the linkages.

So I'm probably looking at another gearbox. The existing one is marked 20DP47 but all of the second hand units found on the internet have high mileage. Would gearbox 20DP48 fit as they are newer available with less mileage? Or another newer version?

I would try & find a reputable transmission specialist & get a daignosis before anything else.I'm leaning towards a selector problem but am not familiar with the cable system.Good luck & let us know how you get on.

Hi Ron,

Took it to a local garage this morning and to my surprise they diagnosed a broken linkage cable. I couldn't see it when I had a look. In fact I'm surprised as moving the gear stick moved the cables in and out at the gearbox. They were able to move it into neutral and its now in a more useable 3rd. I'm going to have a second look before I order a new set of cables.

Fingers crossed that the cable is your problem, that will save a bit of graft (assuming the cables are easier to fit than a new box)  Smile

Well... the garage was correct, it was the cables. Better than having to change/repair the gearbox. That said the cables weren't cheap. Still all done now.
