MPG

I know that is a subjective matter, I have just bought a Berlingo, what is the average real world MPG for a 50K mile 1.6 115bhp HDi  Berlingo, fully serviced,  driven normally, ie mixed driving?, what can I reasonably expect?

40 to 50 mpg mixed I'd say from mine, constant town driving I get 42.5 but when I was commuting into the next city I was getting 49-50.

Roughly 500 per tank of diesel before the light comes on.

M59 1.6 90 model ..... I took a run from home to Leominster and with my usual jaunty progress I got an mpg of 48.6 according to the computer ..

fast forward a week and I did the same journey following my son in his Vito van, he tends to think more of the planet than I do and according to the computer I got an mpg of 64.7 ... wow !!

As I say it is subjective.

^^^ Same model as Geoff with 150,000 miles gave us an overall average of 44 mpg over two years.
Latterly that was 62 mpg over about 5,000 miles after replacing all four tyres and getting the tracking done.

The Mini (Lighter car) with same engine as you has 133,000 miles on it and has an average of 59.8 mpg over 8,000 miles.

Driving is mainly rural, with some motorway/dual carriageway. No heavy town traffic/commuter crawl. Figures based on an (anoraky) spreadsheet.

My driving is pretty mixed and according to My Citroen app my average since time began with my current K9 albeit same engine etc is....

With the aero dynamics of a brick 50mpg is damm good. My previous car, a Kia Ceed Eco 60 mpg is the norm, once got 72mpg when really trying.

For what it's worth, Mk3 Bingo ( chamfered brick aerodynamics!!!) 1.9HDi 90 variant with 80k returns around 52 MPG on my usual work commute. That's up and down valley roads and eventually onto what passes in Wales for an "A" road, though more like "a road" with a 47 mile return trip......... but here's a question.....
Does your MPG improve if you leave the MPG display showing on the dash while you drive?

Only have MPG display on the Pug Boxer Van and my Subaru. On the latter it makes no difference - sticks at about 30 mpg regardless as its a big, heavy, automatic barge of a beast.

It does work on the Pug though - whilst the 'instant mpg' readout may be a little sensitive it often suggests that on the motorway/long shallow inclines 60 mph in fifth gear is more economical than sixth gear even though the engine is not labouring at all in sixth. On a regular 250 mile run along M6/A14 we've since found that not using sixth gear at all was saving about £5 (so £2.50 each way, a penny a mile).

This is an overtall body with a luton (so maybe even less aerodynamic than a Berlingo) and is coming in at around 3.5 tonnes plus a 750kg trailer - so my guess is that there's a torque 'sweet spot' that suits the setup in fifth whereas on the standarda van body sixth may be better.

It does make for a bit of nerdy fun too.

I'm getting 4.1L per 100km average on long trips with 2.0hdi. I have long gears but I think that 1.6 can't be much worse.
