1.6 HDI out 1.9D in, is this a straight forward swap?
#1
Hey all. This may seem an odd direction for an engine swap. Ripping out a 1.6 hdi and fitting a 1.9d. I just picked up an 08 plate van with real good bodywork for a "worth a try" price. The 1.6 hdi engine decided to commit hara-kiri, hence the low price.
Now i could waste my time (and money) repairing the engine. But then i would just be waiting for the inevitable to happen again.
Or i am hoping i could fit a boggo 1.9D engine in its place without too much hasstle.

Possibly a long shot (search says no!) But has anyone got any insite as to any issues i may encounter with this option?

Thanks in advance ?

They are two completely different propositions if you read the history of the vehicles. Your biggest problem is going to be the electronics that control the 1.6hdi and all the other systems.
So where does this bit go then ?

Yeah i spent a few wee hours doing a bit of research last night. I think i have decided against this idea.
I had a quick look at the van this morning. I got it running. The turbo has a fair bit of play in it.
The van seems to missfire a lot, then settle a little when i got a bit of heat in it. Smoked a bit, understandably if the turbo is bypassing.

Also doing some reading, seems that the 1.6hdi engine is a good little unit if maintained properly and frequently with the correct fluids.

Will get it plugged in and see what comes up there. Then work my way around it and see what the best option would be budget wise.

Thanks for your reply ?

1, Flush oil
2, Drop sump & clean as needed
3, Get a new turbo & oil feed pipe.
4, Remove or update the strainer in the lower oil feed pipe banjo bolt.

I have done 1.9d to 2.0hdi, it didn't go well coz the dishonest guy I gave the work brought a kit from M49 and force fitted it. I really got shafted but that made me to learn the differences as I have had to redo a lot of stuff. The 1.9d uses a different cradle from the 2.0 and 1.6hdi. I am assuming you will buy everything including but not limited to the following:-

Engine
Gearbox
All brackets for both engine and gearbox
Front (main) harness with Bsm
ECU Kit (ECU, Bsi, Keys, transponder) - from one car
Air cleaner
Radiator hoses
Engine cradle

Driveshafts should be interchangeable but ABS/ESP systems if fitted may differ.

However, in my opinion, I would recommend that you swap to a 2.0hdi which is a properly made engine, you wont miss the power and also save on the cradle.

Having had a better look at the van, the engine isnt as kaboom as i first assumed. I managed to drive it after clipping a load of hoses back on. Lots of smoke at start up and lumpy. Clears a bit when worm, still pull really well tbh.
I think im leaning towards repairing this one now and keeping on top of the servicing. It has had 10 previous keeper's and id say the last few have neglected it.

I'm looking forward to hopefully getting it back to as near to showroom fresh as possible ?
