Broken Glow Plug Tip
#1
My 1.6 Hdi smokes on start up and i thought i would change glow plugs, It comes up as a fault on diagnostic, the first one came out no probs then the second one it broke the tip into the head. What would be the best way to remove it please? Blush

Personally I would just try starting it up and letting it idle, as the engine heats up the broken tip may come loose.
I would place a thick towel or similar above the glow plug hole to catch the tip if it is ejected.

Be aware that there will be a lot of force behind the tip if ejected, this could be very dangerous so you want to be well out of the way!

If I was in your position I would give it a try.

It's a build up of carbon on the glow plug tip that causes them to snap, even when they don't snap the carbon can make them very difficult to remove even when you have them fully screwed out they still hang on and often won't easily come free, you probably know this.

Hopefully the heat from running the engine will help loosen the carbon and the tip.

If it doesn't come out have a read of the advice in the thread below.

You could try revving up to 4800 rpm to force it out with compression like its mentioned in the form but i'll guarantee you its a waste of fuel, Abuse to the engine and probably still wont drive it out. Worse comes to worse you could be looking at removing the head to drive it out that way but other than that its a case of your lucky or as it usually happens your taking the head of to extract the tip.
